Two things about programming: 1. Nobody really knows how to do it. 2. If you have a system for doing it, you're doing the computer's job. (Sadly I cannot find the source of this quote.)

It depends. Any IP-based socket will still go through some protocol stack (routing and filtering). On the other hand, unix domain sockets are optimized for IPC and should perform well. But any socket will require a copy, and thus be slower

Same for me. In weeks 1-2 I usually know what I want to do, and instead of doing it, I pick up a bad habit. Like obsessive news-reading. In weeks 2-3 I usually give up, and suddenly the bad habit is gone and I'm productive doing some g

What helped me is to use an app as meditation timer. It can send a notification if I haven't meditated for a day. (No matter how briefly; five minutes is already so much better than nothing.) The sport is to never trigger the notificat

I'm also a big fan of emacs' dumb autocompletion, mainly dabbrev-expand. (Which hippie-expand uses.) I sometimes try other autocompletion methods, including those that use a proper cross-reference. But most of the time I just fall

Keep in mind that there could be a very good explanation for such a no-show, like death of a family member. But if the company has no second thought about wasting time of candidates then I would stop asking myself how to "get in"

I agree about the type system, but as far as async is concerned, javascript with its (now standardized) promises is miles ahead. The main advantage IMO is not to gain performance, but to allow concurrency without data races (as required by

Work output is one thing, but it cannot be the only morale of this story. Surely there is also some intrinsic value in creating a friendly workplace, independent of economical success. It's also a story about how to realize those value

Most 3D printers don't have massive printing heads. If they drive into the end-stops, the motors will likely just skip steps and be stuck. They are not designed to apply much force. I'm much more worried about the heating element.
