This is the first time I hear about IFTTT. I like it very much. The name is terrible though. The other similar startup on HN, Zapier, has a much better, easier to remember name. I'd go as far as to suggest to change the name. Here's one: ap

I think I understand what IFTTT is, but I don't get the "IFFFT for business" tagline. How is IFTTT itself not for business? Is it just the different set of APIs supported? I assume IFTTT itself could add those at some point?

We were doing this as part of a fundraising process, so I'm not sure how it would go without that. I presume it'd be cheaper although I'd still want a lawyer involved. But, if there's no fundraising, then based on my experiences I wouldn't

I looked at the site, read this, but I still don't get it. I think you should have more a straightforward description instead of "Easiest way to find quality content." Also remember that you're releasing this for HN right now, so you can be

Visual Studio has an extension engine, you can download many extensions for free. Go to Tools > Extension Manager and browse away. There's one called Productivity Power Tools that we just install by default. Also, XCode has a nice featu

I don't think the OP is right in general. What if your customer sees Heroku's name, and gets confused? She starts asking questions like: Who is on the other end? Am I in business with X or with Heroku? Who should i call?

From experience (and MMM), let's say writing the software takes X mandays of effort. Making it run, and then run well inside a single organization with that organizations workload is 3x multiplier. Turning it into something that can be sold

Their goal with the hieararchy is to create "table groups", ie. [regions of] groups of tables that stick together in terms of _sharding_, achieved by looking at the primary key (PK) of the root table in their case, which if you notice is sh

If you look at the example tables, what they're doing is sharding based on customerID, so sections of those tables with the same customerID "stick" together and are guaranteed to be stored together, on the same machine(s) (plural because of

Thanks for all the answers to my rant. I'm a regular customer at iStockphoto, but for some reason I wasn't aware of higher-end options like Getty. Based on some of the comments is this thread it seems to me their business model is like "Ent

I have Evernote installed on all my machines and use it regularly. If they started charging for it I'd probably pay $5/month for it. Assuming 20M active users and a sky-high 10% conversion rate [+] at $5/month gives $120M/year in revenue, w

On the other hand, there are plenty of people with determination and focus who aren't successful in the Instagram sense of walking away with $100M+ after 2 years of work.

Bubble was my first thought, but then I read the article and this actually sounds pretty sensible. In cases like this one must keep in mind that $3.4M for a company isn't that much, you can spend that easily on salaries and marketing.

Assuming first GET will succeed and return quickly in 99.9..9% of the cases, so always sending a second GET seems wasteful, as it would put constant additional load on the network, CPUs and disks.
