Mother doesn't need the money, kid doesn't need it either, text written by her mother pretending to be her... This is a downright scam.

Well, some people just like money. I don't think you'll be able to find another justification sadly. Not sure how come she raised 7k.

This thing is completely ridiculous. Dear PlayHaven and SendGrid, hire both of your ex-employees back, publically apologize, and start making sense.

Personally I guess I'll learn vim/emacs someday, but right now I'd rather spend my time building stuff than learning an editor.

Vim out of the box is a perfectly adequate text editor, and all you need to know to use it is /?xiap ESC 99dd :wq! and the arrow keys. With gq (formerly Q, RIP) you can then edit text. hlJG<>wbvn.fF;#% help too, especially for code

One thing not mentioned in the article: you don't have to render everything on a single canvas, you can use multiple canvases as layers. This is specially useful to separate what is updated often with what changes rarely, for instance the

Interesting. It looks like one can summon PG by just quoting him. We should try this more often.

FYI, browser profilers can't evaluate the efficiency of your jQuery selectors, which can be a bottleneck aswell depending on what you do. I personally use this: https://github.com/osteele/jquery-profile

This is probably the best way to approach it. It doesn't come off as rude, it addresses what it has to address, and it lets everyone reach their own conclusions.

I agree, whether an idea sucks or not is a very subjective thing, and sometimes it can be naive to believe that what you think is going to apply to entire population of the planet. That being said, one should probably point out why in yo

But then again they would have never been able to remove the risk of doing it no matter what they asked, so it's probably understandable they chose to ask for a psychological tap on the back.

This is unfortunately true, and that's why it's exciting to see Mozilla do something about it. As it stands right now, Chrome is the better tool, and if you prefer Firebug to it chances are you haven't tried Chrome for long enough.

You could always write a rant about how good stuff doesn't make it to the front page; usually that has a better chance of showing up in the front page than the good stuff itself.

Why would they raise money otherwise? Not much point in raising +$500k if you plan to stay solo and coding at home.

If you plan on hiring people and rent an office space, it definitively won't give the company a long life span.

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought wearing your company t-shirt makes you look obnoxious, specially if no one has heard of the company.

Frankly it does look way better without the navbar. I never understood this move by Google of making that bar black; I guess there was some discussion internally along the lines of "yes, it looks like crap, but we have the data here and it

Just do it. Get started, make a move. Thinking and reading advice about it on HN won't get you anywhere without action. You are not a loser, but you've got to stop thinking and start doing. (I've been there, hence the tip)

Working on a web product for +1 year here and we are still a few months away for release. Personally I think I'll cry when I see the first sign up that isn't a test account. If I ever see it.

Even a billion-dollar business is simply a distraction to Google I think they are exaggerating a bit there. Sure, million-dollar businesses are a distraction for Google, but billion dollar ones? Pretty sure they actually like them. It

Usually I try hard to find the simplest solution to a problem, not just the one that works. I find simplicity doesn't hinder what you are capable of building, but I suppose this is subjective.
