In my case, my stereo is connected to an inexpensive Airplay adapter. So I do get all the advantages of a connected device, but if the adapter is bricked, I can easily replace just that small device. And more likely, when there’s a new sta

And the obvious solution is to isolate the device from the world. Most of my stereo is isolated from “the world”, and some parts are close to 30 years old. Why does a soundbar need contact with the internet?

So what do we buy instead? Brother was the last not-evil printer company I knew of.

If everyone just solved the problem for themselves there wouldn’t be any problem for the world. The real problem is that a lot of people use everyone else as an excuse to do nothing, and then nothing gets done.

I don't think that "Bell curve" should be interpreted strictly as a Gaussian in this context, but more literally as a curve with a shape resembling a bell.

Or maybe the smartest people understand that it is as important that less smart/experienced people than them can work with the code.

You don’t have to go as far as the Middle East. A significant part of the US electorate takes the Bible as true.

The rules are what make it flexible. The rules let me understand what the heck is going on in the code you wrote so I can change it. Code that is faster to rewrite from scratch isn’t flexible.

I’d say that globally we have agreed on a system of units and measurements. It’s just the US and a handful of third world countries that don’t follow that system.

”Far left” is the new ”communism”. ”The civil rights movement is communism.” ”Gay marriage is far left.” The labels don’t mean anything else than ”something we don’t like and you should be scared of”.

The post makes it clear that the author made the votes because of who wrote them. He did it intentionally and systematically. That was the reason to suspend the author. Reading before commenting saves everyone time, not only mine and yours,

Old forests sequester more carbon than new ones. When you cut down a tree, you leave half of it under ground, and when the roots break down all that carbon is released to the atmosphere. It is far from straightforward whether it is better t

The point raised about removing the attributions of Luigi Mangione is valid and important. I don't sympathise much with the authors whining about being suspended for upvoting Mangione's post, just because they were Mangione's

We are on the other hand still waiting for the room temperature super conductor and the fusion reactors. I’d say that most interesting breakthroughs never reach the stage where they are useful.

Maybe that’s the problem. Everyone knows that abstractions are desirable, and encapsulates as much as they can, and ends up with redirection hell without any of the advantages of true abstractions. If people understood what the word actuall

You can only do the “what” with clearer code. The “why” needs some documentation. Even if it is obvious what the strange conditionals do, someone needs to have written down that this particular code is there because the special exemption fr
