I want people to be able to profit from value they create, even if that value is easily copied. I also think that copying/sharing content -- writing, photographs, music, art, video -- has been incredibly healthy for the Internet and really

"Right click" is meaningless to Mac laptops and every mobile device. For that reason alone, I dislike using the text "Right click to save." I dunno how I feel about forcing a download without a bit more clarity to the user.

I like driving / motorcycle riding too much to agree with this, but it really is ridiculous that some people are afraid of computers driving on public roads. When I see a Google self-driving car on the road, I am relieved.

They're not going to be able to legislate safe driving. Drivers are oblivious to the danger they wield with two-ton blocks of steel. It's not just distractions, it's a total lack of care. Piling on more conditions and limitations on phone u

I had a bad feeing about these guys when Car and Driver published a review in which the green Fisker got 24 miles of range on a charge and, after that, retuned just 24 mpg on gasoline. Overweight, overwrought. Further shows how impressive i

I only ever want a full site when the mobile layout is lacking something I know should be there. Which is then a fault of the mobile layout, not the method it's delivered.

Especially considering the time it takes to charge the car. If you can do all charging while you're sleeping, then no biggie, but if you have to charge in the middle of your business trip to Los Angeles you can +$200 to your monthly tab, by

I'm saying that less drag and less engine speed are giving the fuel efficiency gains. I am saying that, typically, braking wipes out all of those gains and more. I am saying that regenerative braking often reduces the negative impact of bra

The topic is HN being critical of authors suggesting that regenerative braking is a net positive. I suspect that in both the NYT article and in this CR article, the author is mistaken about the role of regenerative braking on fuel efficienc

The statement is not false, look at EPA gas mileage numbers for hybrids over the last decade. You're arguing against something I was careful not to say.

In a car without regenerative braking, city driving will return worse gas mileage than highway driving. In a car that does have regenerative braking, city driving will often return higher mileage. The regen braking isn't the sole source of

To be fair, UK gas mileage numbers are always higher than US numbers, for two reasons. 1) US and UK use different gas mileage verification (we have EPA, they have...). 2) A gallon in the UK is bigger than our gallon. It is not precisely the

The point is that the author /did/ charge the car sufficiently. The car told him he could make each leg of the trip, and why would he waste an hour to charge the car completely? It would be silly to not spend 30 seconds to finish filling up

Correct, if you already know something then it is likely not news. I reckon most people -- myself very much included -- 1) weren't aware of the tax change in 2010, and 2) definitely didn't have its expiration on their calendars.

I don't work in HR so I'm not familiar with how companies deal with this, but I would be surprised if it doesn't hit your paycheck somehow -- directly deducting it from your current pay may be less likely than factoring the added cost into

If people want labels, they should demand them in the market. Don't buy foods that don't label. Do buy foods that do label. If they want to buy a food that doesn't label, write the producer and tell them you won't buy without a label. I'm a
