The standard federal limit is 18 months. An appeals court said that didn’t apply to him because he was violating a plea agreement that he voluntarily entered into.

“Federal law generally limits jail time for contempt of court to 18 months. But a federal appeals court in 2019 rejected Thompson’s argument that that law applies to him, saying his refusal violated conditions of a plea agreement.” https:&

This link said that his contempt violated a plea agreement and that’s why they were able to hold him longer than the standard limit of 18 months. https://apnews.com/article/tommy-thompson-gold-coins-shipwre...

I wonder if there is a statute of limitations on suing an estate. Let’s say he dies in 5 years. 10 years later his children suddenly clearly become rich and can’t explain how. Clearly it looks like he passed the gold to them somehow. Could

Isn’t that exactly what this article is about? A guy that was released from jail on contempt because it can’t be used indefinitely?

As a longtime Google Fiber customer, it’s Google Fiber. My service has been effectively perfect. My price has barely changed in a long time, though they’ve added faster tiers as options. They let me use my own equipment without any hassle.

I don’t think it would be an antitrust risk. I don’t understand the argument for why allowing it would mean more Apple computer hardware sales though. Could you explain why you think that would happen?

I thought it was emulating everything like QEMU, not using virtualization hardware like you normally would on a computer.

Yep. A Neo will win a race with a similar speed Windows computer full of bundled crap and security slop. But it would work the other way around too. The nice thing about Macs is even if you see a lot of what Apple puts on the computers as u

And Windows laptops are such a commodity business that prices are incredibly low. So PC makers load ‘em up with junk because they get paid for those deals. They are more incentivized by that than the few lost sales from people who know bett

In college I remember one room had some kind of all-in-one PCs built into the desks. It would have been useful. Except they were unusably slow. Literally. Log in when class starts, you may get control after 10+ minutes. Opening a web browse

Speculation I’ve heard from Ben Thompson of Stratechery is this machine is, in part, a way to get value out of iPhone Pro chips that had defects. The Neo has a 5 core GPU. The iPhone 16 Pro had a 6 core. So, if he’s correct, these are the s

The M line was derived from the A line in the phones, and the individual cores are generally the same (though not in the same year). Counts, accelerators, other stuff on package/die is custom. I think it was a fair question too. Even i

Ish. It’s better in some ways, like single core and maybe multi, but not by a ton. At the same time I think the M1 may have more raw GPU power, though missing a few fancy features. Hardware is mostly worse, but that’s to be expected for the

Possible catch: Rosetta 2 goes away next year in macOS 27. I don’t know what the story for VMs is. I’d really like to know as it affects me. Sure you can go QEMU, but there’s a real performance hit there.

I hadn’t thought of that. In my mind I think Apple will say “not an iPad, you don’t get it” but the distinction (hardware UI wise) would be much much fuzzier than today.

The last 25 years of Apple has made it pretty clear that’s not “the Apple way”. Yeah they could . They could do a lot of things people constantly ask about, like upgradable RAM. But there is no reason to think they will.

There are other reasons. A big factor in the success of the iPad and maybe just some degree the iPhone, but especially the iPad, is that it’s “unbreakable”. All out restrictions mean it’s computer people don’t worry will suddenly stop worki

I’ve been hoping Apple would allow this for years, although it doesn’t seem like something they would do. The fact that iPadOS now has windowing seems like it would only make it work better. iPads can already do everything necessary, so why

Cost. It’s 100% cost. The USB-C port that’s already there anyway is free, thus way cheaper. No special port. No special cable in the box. I don’t think it will come in the next revision.

Yep everyone has their preference. A lot of us have done both. I’ve run multiple distros. I’ve played with low level software. I have used and continue to use open source tools in places. And I prefer my Mac to this day as my main machine.

I see no reason they couldn’t. But we know there’s lots of other models that they’re already working on. We don’t know how similar or different it is from an OS perspective.
