It can't be cash today. Back then, cash was tied to gold. Now any governement can print more cash to "ease" the crash and it's the very first thing they'll do.

I can only reach the "meh" level of enthusiasm. RK3588 was released in 2022 and AFAIK it still doesn't have video decoding acceleration in mainline kernel/mesa/ffmpeg.

And Gentoo can also be based on musl (experimental). I tried it for a while on a SBC, but arm (32bit) is not well supported in Gentoo and musl on arm is almost unusable, like ... completely abandoned.

I don't know about UEFI - I don't have any UEFI system - but my Gigabyte 880GA motherboard can certainly do RTC power-on from BIOS settings and it's far from being a server motherboard.

PS: Correction! /etc/rc.local isn't OK. The ARP record needs to be reloaded if br-lan interface is restarted, such as when changing other network settings in WebUI. So only /etc/firewall.user will do.

It's actually worse than in China in other ways too: - China: no records about a person is a good thing - Elsewhere: no records is a very bad thing - China: records can be corrected and eliminated - Elsewhere: records are pe

There's a "EuP 2013" setting in the BIOS/UEFI. Disable that. If you use Windows, check in device manager for a setting to allow the device to wake up the computer. (I can't remember the exact name.)

Why don't you send WOL directly over the internet? (You'll need to set up a permanent ARP record on the router.) Or login into the router and send WoL from there? Or have Raspberry always on with ssh? Or set a power-on timer in BI

Not low power. Electricity over 10 years would cost 10 times more than the board.

You're most probably right, but this discussion started with my statement that there are no low power NAS boards. The need for low power NAS boards is an entirely different matter. And so are advices on how to get rich.

Because TCO is less with these cheap old drives and I can have RAID5 instead of just RAID1 or no RAID at all. But you're right. In a few years it will become advantageous to switch to a couple of larger HDDs. I could probably do it rig

It's nice to be rich and not care, isn't it... I calculated that over the entire lifetime of my current system, the energy will cost me more than the system itself, all 10 HDDs included, and it's only 50 W or so.

It's 2-3 times more than the drives. All 8 HDDs consume 4W in sleep, and they sleep more than 80% of the time (all night, all day while I'm at work, they only start 2-3 hours in the evening).

I've done the calculations just now: 10W constant over 10 years would cost me 275 euro. My hard drives (7 ST2000DL003 and one ST2000DL001) are 10-15 years old now. They're all different batches, none failed yet, so I expect it to

There is power management for HDDs, you know... For my typical usage, the hard drives are probably more than 80% in sleep mode. If I had more SATA ports, I could probably add a frequent-access cache on a SSD and then they would be 99% sleep
