Agreed. They provide value to the consumer. They also are good for small businesses. People will scoff, but it's true. Compare them to other companies like Amazon or Uber who's model is to drive small businesses to extinction.

Neither company has pure motives here. Apple just so happens to take a 30% cut of in-app purchases, so they stand to benefit immensely from a change to that model. They also have their own ad platform that will benefit from this. Both sides

> But I’m at the point in life, where I want to work with tech that I enjoy. Exactly. When people say "You should work on boring tech." my thought is "Mmkay, sure thing buddy, you do you."

I disagree with pretty much everything in your comment. > NoSQL stores can scale better in certain data access patterns Exactly.

How do you load balance across replicas? How do you shard across replicas?

I would prefer Python or Node over JVM for a light weight microservice. I would choose a NoSQL store for something that needs to scale.

Seems like the claim that this pandemic response team would have made a difference is the assertion that needs to be proven. I'm not terribly convinced that a bit more beurocracy would have made any difference at all.

Many problems with your comment. First SARS occurred in 2003 before Obama. It was stopped primarily because it does not spread asymptomatically. SARS-COV-2 does. That is the difference.

Total nonsense. Europe has just as many if not more cases. The idea that another president would have made any difference is pure wishful thinking.

I had a physics professor who liked to point out that Feynman (who we all idolized as college students studying physics) used to solve hundreds and hundreds of classical mechanics problems for fun, in his spare time. These were the same hom

I felt that "master"/"slave" was imprecise and just kind of weird terminology long ago before it was flagged as problematic. "leader"/"replica" describes the behavior better.

Yeah. There's a lot of relief in letting go, accepting that other people are outside of your power to control, and just practicing acceptance no matter how wrong or annoying or stupid you think people are being.
