I was always intrigued by the motivation for building houses on the bridge itself. It seems like one of those interzone areas that shouldn't exist but does[1]. The usually listed reason is that space inside the City walls was at a prem

It’s papers like this that will act as the justification of the next round of FAANG lAIoffs. Regardless of how successful this approach is in the long term.

No but I can blame them for profiteering during covid. Michelle Mone clearly wasn't the only one punting over-priced, poor quality PPE via the special Tory VIP system. Cumulatively, how much have Tory VIPs taken out of the economy sinc

Well obviously but poster's point was that it's a British/Commonwealth colloquialism to do that. It started as "J Sainsbury" with no apostrophe s. Then it changed it registered as "J. Sainsbury Limited" in

That's an interesting question because there are actually two legally separate Aldi companies, Aldi Sud and Aldi Nord. They divide Europe up by country so you'd have to get them to cooperate on that. https://en.wikipedi

I had an N95 when it first came out. It wasn't the screen so much that lured me to an iPhone but the web browsing experience. Trying to use the browser on the N95 was difficult it was slow to load pages and the reformatting was bare

You mean Ericsson. It only became SonyEricsson after the Ericsson management fucked up handling a fire at their supplier Philips. The story I heard was that Ericsson had a culture of not handing bad news up the management change unless it

I got bitten with the metalwork bug during lockdown. I spend most of my time making imperfect tools that I could buy cheaper. It's just so satisfying to build something yourself from a design though. Being able to take soft silver-ste

Totally agree on the Lotus. Although I prefer the original 108 design to the 110. Seeing Chris Boardman win on it at the Barcelona Olympics was like seeing something arrive from another planet. It left quite an impression on a young me. I

That is true but aluminium requires less energy to recycle when you're finished with it. I have bikes made of steel, aluminium and carbon fibre. I don't worry about the longevity of any of them. Hydro-formed aluminium is cheap, r

They fell out of favour because the UCI doesn’t allow them in road TTs. Now that doesn’t matter to pure triathlon bikes (as they’re not governed by the UCI) but it matters to the manufacturers accessing a much smaller sub-market. It also ma

Is Chrome the better product? IMHO Firefox provides much better tools for ad blocking and privacy. Those are both very important to me and areas I think Chrome is weak.

That interesting. I’d love to know more of the story. I guess these days you’d use either GPS on its own or a cadence sensor and let your Garmin GPS figure out the wheel size automatically.

Nah, I still think the author has it right. The combination of cheaper, faster processors and a market that wanted to constantly upgrade is what killed the Amiga. As mentioned by an earlier commentor, who your market was really counted ba

I've had the same car since 2014 because I don't drive much. From my perspective this is still good advice. With current EVs I'd have to keep that it a very long time just to break even with the energy used in manufacturing.

I vaguely remember a story about an Acorn Archimedes[1] or it's Unix variant used for some embedded system in the City of London that was caught in an IRA bomb blast. Apparently that booted up like a trooper and carried afterwards too.
