It's not just how long it lasts. When we redid our kitchen our fitter had to argue with our whitegoods supplier for us. The guy in the shop couldn't understand why I wanted a built in Miele fridge-freezer over what ever generic he

VideoToasters were a thing but they didn’t work with PAL, at at least not the original version. I agree that the models looked better IMHO.

I know you’re joking but there’s a simpler way to get the same effect. There are people who attach a pool noodle to the back of their bike sticking out straight into the road less than proper passing distance. They are highly visible and th

> There are only so many ships, after all. One of the reasons they kept their bench full, rather than firing the men on it, was because they would try to take enemy ships as “prizes” rather than sink them. That meant they needed traine

Master and Commander[1], I love that film and the series of books. A detail I loved from both is that the French are treated with respect as formidable adversaries. There's no love lost in battle but when either side are captured they

Also the article side steps talking about JRuby or TruffleRuby, both of which are GVL free so threads do run in parallel there. Really this is just a discussion of concurrency on the MRI rather than something to the Ruby language itself.

I think we have quite a way to go yet. We already have TruffleRuby and JRuby using advnaced JITs courtacy of the JVM. Whilst both show that amazing things are possible I think Crystal is still ahead of both in terms of raw performance. The

I think the difference in outcry is because we know exactly who cut the 500 year old Enfield tree down. These's no mystery, it was Toby Carvery owners Mitchells & Butlers plc. It's also well known that they are now facing lega

Pure marketing doesn’t always win. There are counter examples. Famously Toyota beat many companies that were basing their strategy on marketing rather than quality. They were able to use quality as part of their marketing. My father in law

20 minutes? Who’s got time for that? The original DHH demo video[1], from 19 years ago, was a blog in 15 minutes. AI is clearly rubbish! :P 1. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzj723LkRJY

That’s true but it would be useful to upfront specify exactly what’s in an array and exactly how big it will be for the entire life of the array.

I respect this view but I can really see the utility of gradual typing as your project grows and matures. I also wonder if we’ll eventually be able to pass type information to the JIT. If that helps ruby grow I’m all for it.

Ruby isn't standing still in terms of performance either. YJIT is getting better all the time and ZJIT is on the horizon too. For concurrency, async fibres are brilliant but not the only game in town. Using good old processes works re

Jake Zimmerman wrote this excellent blog post[1] on the current state of Sorbet. I was impressed at recent changes in the Sorbet syntax but also with the proposal that we make code comments available to the ruby VM. That would allow Sorbet

Is it? I think it's a problem in the UK too. Every charging network seems to have its own associated app. Planning long journeys means having an app for every stop. It really shouldn't.
