I wouldn’t say trash. For the record, it let you read the same web pages as a desktop computer over WiFi. It had a usable mapping app and good music app. The rest of the experience, stuff like alarms, calculator, address book, etc. also wor

I imagine that proximity to Oxford and Cambridge affected that.

You could if you remembered to make commits between every small, low value text edit. :P Meanwhile the undo/redo tree is always there, ready to use and has no overhead. You can ignore it completely until you need it to save your arse.

It's not mentioned in the article but Vim (and NeoVim) keep undo/redo history in a tree rather than a simple linear timeline[1]. The practical usage is it's aways possible to get back to a previous state you were in, which is

I think the problem is that even if you have a "no training" license AI companies will just ignore it and you'll be left having to take legal action. If the big publishing firms couldn't win an action against Meta for us

You can still use them — it’s just that they have a new purpose; getting things ignored by AI detection or AI;DR. Now you can ask for outlandish things at work knowing your boss won’t read it and his summariser will ignore it as slop — win.

The real issue here is the word "users". They're silently collecting very personal information, without permission, from people that not users. You can't object to Tiktok collecting information about your mental health

Apple Maps is still such a sucky service, at least where I live and where I travel to. It regularly directs me to incorrect addresses and businesses and labels places obviously incorrectly. Every use of the search function promotes guide co

I think there's room for multiple approaches here. Cloud based AI obviously has a lot of advantages e.g. batched proccessing on the best hardward, low power edge devices, data sharing, etc. There's still room for local inference t

It seems to me that people have been saying that Apple will be left behind since the Apple II. That they keep doing non-obvious things that somehow succeed is what makes them an interesting company. I don't know that Apple will domina

I kind of think that “art” that is about repeat sales and branding is really more craft than art. I don’t mean that it’s without merit just that although these things live in the same space they are not the same.

I love these old pictures of London. You can feel the life. At the time London was the largest city in the world at the centre of the large emprie of all time. No wonder Dracula was making a beeline for it.

For the usecase of "How do I do thing X in Excell" you could probably get pretty far with just adding a small, local LLM running on the user's machine. That would move the cost of running the model to the end user but it woul

What ammuses me is that the little Korg Volcas synced up in the demo can be found really cheaply if you look around. They were low cost units to begin with and are now old enough to be considered classic equipment so there are loads on the

I used to think that. I really don't care about most new phone features and for my laptop the M1 Max is still a really decent chip. I do want to run local LLM agents though and I think a Mac Studio with an M5 Ultra (when it comes out)

I've seen the AI-8850 LLM Acceleration M.2 Module advertised as an alternative RPi accellorator (you need an M.2 hat for it). That's also limited to 8Gb RAM so again you might be better off with a larger 16Gb Pi and using the CPU

True concurrency (like JRuby), fast performance and thread-safe hashes. What's not to love. I love that Ruby has 3 high quality implementations in MRI, JRuby and Truffleruby.
