I think you can very well extract work from having a membrane and selectively let one substance mix into the other but not the other in the first [0]. It is called Osmosis [1]. [0]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiper

I think the most unintuitive even unsettling aspect of entropy is that the entropy of black holes is proportional to their surface area, not their volume [0]. That is only briefly mentioned in the video and not discussed any further. [0] h

Seriously? Is that just language semantics or does it actually make sense to apply this definition of (fluid) water being dry? Also, doesn't water touch itself and is thus wet too?

Well in both your questions it depends on how you define speed. It is commonly understood to be the first derivative of position, or the quotient of distance divided by a time-span. But how do you define and measure distance and time-spans?

Not just the representation is much better than IEEE 754, which is awful (e.g. having negative zero and wasting lots of combinations on encoding NaN even though a single one would do). And not just that, it seems they also standardized arit

You don't even need the complex part for this. You can do the infinity-projection trick on the real numbers alone as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projectively_extended_real_lin... A similar trick (point at

One style that haven't seen discussed is a hybrid / mixture of in-code (e.g. printf trace-logs) and out-of-code (using external tools like an attached debugger) debugging. What I do is I encode conditional breakpoints in the sourc

I think in both domains there are parts which are purely technical (wrong or right) and others which are well ... an art. In art these parts are often overlooked, but they are significant none the less. E.g. getting the proportions right is

I wonder how much this can be improved if metadata is taken into account as well. Especially the distribution of common post dates and times modulo a week, which also exposes in which timezone somebody probably lives.

Not only that, the suffix array [1] is using counting sort O(n) instead of a comparison based O(n log n) sort. That is because they assume integer alphabets. For general alphabets they can only achieve O(n log n). [1] https://arx
