You get zero ads in Firefox mobile with uBlock Origin and it also doesn't cost you anything. I am sure that they will kill this eventually, but hey.

You do know that the Tornado implementation of WebSocket uses a c extension? And if you use FastAPI then you're using Rust for serialisation and validation.

Of course, I am now wondering why people are using /bin/[ in a shell script in 2024?

Wikipedia suggests that they stopped expanding in 2016, only resuming in 2022. I hadn't heard about the resumption, and it is welcome news. I suspect however that many people, especially those outwith the United States, are in the same

The advantage of uv is that it's a statically linked binary. (Yeah, that feels like cheating)

In my previous job, I used Make for my asset pipeline and compilation of javascript. At some point, I discovered esbuild and realised that I had to split the file in two for tasks that had to be done sequentially and those that could be don

What I like about videos is that I can listen to them while doing other things (e.g., dishes, laundry, walking, or gardening). YouTube premium lets you switch the screen off. Annoying that you have to pay for this, but no ads is a nice bonu

I hate to say it, but dealing with high priority incidents with a meeting invite saying "oh shit, all hands on deck" and no further information does not sound healthy. The organisation should have a proper incident response plan i

How so? There is no excuse for sending a meeting invite without an explanation as to what will be discussed or what you hope to achieve. That just results in aimless meetings that either have too many unnecessary attendees or missing people

This is good advice. I hadn't thought to use a RACI chart in this way, but as you describe it, it seems like the most obvious application.

It seems reasonable to me. I tell my reports to decline meeting requests unless the invitations include an agenda and a clear goal. If you're asking for 30 minutes or an hour of someone's time, it is only common courtesy to tell t

Ten years ago, my commute was an hour by bus each way. I didn't mind it so much then, but I definitely wouldn't go to an employer who required that of me now. The light railway system is so much nicer than the bus, and I enjoy the

Same. For me, the office is door to door 35 minutes, 20 of those walking, the other 15 on light railway. Any longer than that and I would really struggle. As it is, this arrangement works well for me. I tend to WFH one day out of ten, or if

The problem is that there is no way of knowing what the letter is. All you get is a slip through your door saying an item of mail is waiting for you and has a £5 fee to pay. If you're like me, you pay the fee, fearful that it might b
