My only issue with this is that it assumes my friends use Digg too, and they don't. Kevin speaks a little bit about "tastemakers" (how do I find them? Why do I trust them?) and "publishers" (which sounds a lot like RSS spam... right to you

Yeah, and I would expect the clustering becomes tighter when you move from a general site like CNN to a much more focused site like HN. I guess the value depends on the content and who your friends are!

This depends on the country. If I remember my law class in the UK, there is no legal reason to ship the goods in this situation. The price online is only one that is offered . The buyer giving money to the retailer is considered an accepta

Yes. I remember reading an article on a paper that claimed football was the most "exciting" sport as it had the greatest opportunity to provide upset due to the low scoring. It's more likely that the David's can beat Goliath. This is also c

You have to believe! Like that sticker from an earlier World Cup says: "Pride. Passion. Belief." Don't be so pessimistic!

This has been my experience too. For my American friends: all "checking" in the UK is free. All ATM use for normal ATMs (those you find at banks, not the shady ones at the convenience store) are free, even if that bank isn't yours. This is

Part of California's problems (certainly not all!) are exactly because the taxpayers have too much control of what is spent and borrowed. The number of social welfare things that appear on the ballot when voting time comes around is crazy

The way I think about ORM is that I'm navigating through a data structure. The ORMs I've used (DBIx::Class, SqlAlchemy) represent joins as arrays, so if I want to get all the Employees from the Company object, I just do: employee_array = my

Well, you can specify which Java to compile against (and if the target machine didn't have the right Java, you were SOL anyway). The network resources is a good point, but I'd rather Maven try to go and get a dependency and get it 90% of

The thing I do like about Maven is that you're pretty much guaranteed that if the build works on your machine, it'll work for everyone else too. This might be because it stops you doing anything stupid, but removes power too. Like blunt sci

The problem with this approach is the belief that the university is a place to train undergraduates. Having worked as a staff member, and then jumped to graduate studies, I realized that actually, the modern university is a place of researc

My sneaking suspicion about the entire NoSQL "movement" is that it's really one of cold hard cash. Almost everyone who has moved to NoSQL did so from... drum roll MySQL. As Forbes notes, MySQL has problems. Lots of them. It's good enough

Make that two data points :) The site is unwelcoming, and doesn't tell me why I am there. The About page is a lot better, but doesn't tell me why I want to use Gravity and not go to pre-existing communities. If I want to talk to people abou

This is huge news for New Zealand, and I hope they can push it through. NZ really is hampered by their external infrastructure. I lived in Wellington for 2 years. Offshore speeds were horribly slow, domestic speeds better. Downloading a 1GB

I use LaTeX specifically because I have lots of figures. Word's handling of figures is monstrous: moving them around at the drop of a hat is just awful. Tables are definitely easier in WYSIWYG. Some sort of typographic valhalla would be M

This is absolutely amazing. Would you consider putting some sort of companion web site for your UIO thesis style together? I'd love to use it in my own work, but I'm not proficient enough in LaTeX to just start with your class file. Fantast

It's surprising how few Computer Science papers release code as well. I don't care if it's platform-specific and it requires ridiculous numbers of obscure libraries and only operates on proprietary data that you can't release. I don't care,
