So that depends on what's happening. If it's host maintenance (the machine your database is on needs to be brought down) then you should "see" the same results as Google Compute Engine live migration, which is that you h

I'd love to hear about the errors you're experiencing; if there's any bumps in the road we want to smooth them out ASAP. Please email cloud-sql@google.com with your instance names and the error message, and I'll get some

No. If we need to specifically update MySQL, that's going to cause MySQL to bounce. We don't do that often (you can count on your hands the last year the number of times we actually updated MySQL), and with Second Generation you g

Hey, I'm a software engineer on Cloud SQL. We hear you. We know this is a problem. Unfortunately, there are non-trivial infrastructure changes that need to happen before we can make progress, but it's high on our list of prioritie

Hey, I'm a software engineer on Cloud SQL. Cloud SQL isn't a compatible reimplementation, it's the same vanilla MySQL that you know and love, but with a few tweaks (such as removal of SUPER privileges so you can't bork y

Santa Cruz, CA has banned it for at least the 7 years I've been here... Jamba Juice serves in paper cups instead. I see no practical difference between the paper and the styrofoam (except I hate the handfeel of styrofoam). It seems lik

I used to work for Dyson as an intern some 15 years ago now. Obviously, the company will have to be different than I was there, but one thing that did strike me is that Malmesbury is really out there. [1] No main train line, at least a 40 m

Having never worked on the secret sauce, I honestly don't know. There is a small team of people who tend to do many of the global refactors, I might expect that they are given special permission.

FWIW, apart from the previously mentioned sensitive stuff, we give engineering interns the same level of access we give full-time engineers. We keep things open because it makes things faster; we have an excellent code search tool that'

We do, mostly. Because Piper is a global repository, we have systems to do global safe refactors, and do so often. If the API changes drastically, there's usually a lengthy deprecation period before the API is switched over.

Well, Piper conforms to the Perforce API-ish, and Android and Chrome are both on Git. Mercurial was pushed internally as being the "better" (for some dimension of better) between it and Git back in 2010, but I think even the most

Bit of Column A, bit of Column B. All software tends to unmaintainability, even if you don't touch it (libraries change/deprecate etc). Given enough time, the problems that you are experiencing, say, memory allocation in C, get so
