Can someone please explain to me why Scala has been getting such vitriol on HN comments lately? I've never found Scala "difficult"; you can use Java and take in new bits as you go. Why do people keep saying its too complex? It's no more or

All Java is also a valid subset of Scala, IIRC.

Here's a crack: * The state of affairs of journals today, and the open journal movement. Why in the age of the internet, we're stuck in a relatively ancient publishing system.* If you're talking about "why do we have publishers?", then that

You're reading a lot into one assumption you've made. I'm a grad student. I try out lots of little things. I want to keep them, but I don't want them just on my hard drive (I like them to be available on the Internets). GitHub forces me to

Depends on what is suboptimal to you. If "suboptimal" is "not optimal for the perfect programming language", then sure. If "suboptimal" is "not optimal for real world use", then no. Scala's interop with Java libraries has been a huge, huge

You should make sure you get an internship. I hated school by the time I had my undergraduate CS degree. I took two years in industry, realized I hated it far more than I could have ever imagined, now I am very happy in a PhD program. You n

I remember when I was at university in the UK (a Top 10 one, and Top 5 for Computer Science). One of my graduating friends got hired by Accenture. When he told on of the (well-respected) professors, the professor literally laughed in his fa

Would have loved for this to have a more expensive option so we can finally get Napster/Zune/Spotify-style jukebox subscription.

Yeah, I use the Spreadsheet app the most. It's quicker to download all the Javascript required to run it than it is to boot Excel off my hard drive, and I just use it for groceries and things.

Many of your comments are accurate, but it doesn't mean they are not being worked on. I would be surprised if we don't see new/better bundled applications (particularly for photo/music management, as their other platforms do this better), a

I agree, it's the long game that Apple has been playing... when all campus graduates have pretty much used Macs, and they use Macs at home, they start clamoring for them in the office too. I'm fairly sure I saw numbers indicating Macs makin

My feeling is that this is very much like the "Classic" support that Mac OS X had for a few iterations. Yes, you can run Classic apps, but you don't really want to. Apple themselves only just recently got iTunes from out of their Carbon com

What "threat" was TweetDeck? All Twitter has to do is pull their API key, come up with some story about third-party clients, and that is that. Twitter has always been in the power position.
