Worthwhile and insightful stories are good. Stories that trigger worthwhile and insightful dialogue are good. What's not so good is yet another link of Gruber dutifully cheerleading whatever Apple does, followed by comments about how all Gr

Forcing users to do something isn't always necessarily a bad thing. It depends on the use case. In general, no, I wouldn't want to tweet about a video before seeing it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a use inside of something larger.

Yeah, the first thing I thought of when reading this was Ruby's WEBrick and how it's used in Rails to provide an out-of-the-box local development server. Don't see how that would be a bad thing. Something simpler and quicker than installing

Is the layout of this site borked for any other Chrome users? Looks fine in Firefox, but the layout (sidebar & header) are gone in (my) Chrome OS X. Want to be sure it's not a script-blocking or ad-blocking plugin doing it (I think I di

Agreed. This is something someone might find useful in a project they're working on. Unlike any Techcrunch or Gruber post. If HN were my personal pet project, that would be my link litmus test. "Is this something that might be useful info f

I"m less concerned about Linux taking Windows market share, but I do not want Windows to be considered the only viable option, as so many IT departments do consider it. Even just a 10% drop in market share, with Macs and Linux splitting t

Using Wired's awful iPad app and its ludicrous 700MB downloads as an example of how magazines are bad on tablets is a joke. Go try the Economist app and then come back and try to make the same argument. I hardly read my print copies anymore

I think the Zune launch tarnished the name so permanently that it never recovered. In too many peoples' eyes, it was always the poop-brown also-ran. Which is too bad, because in many ways, the later Zunes were superior devices, although far

Another Microsoft digital media strategy reset? Has it been 5 years already? At least the Zune Marketplace went DRM-free, so people won't get shafted like all those PlaysForSure media buyers.

Just like how he reached for PyUnit for "readability counts", I definitely think of ORMs over raw SQL when it comes to "readability counts". Especially when you're actually working with data, not just the table creation step.

I wonder how many more people have to quit Facebook before we stop getting these "I quit Social Network X" martyr posts. Honestly, it's like the people who never fail to let a new acquaintance know that they abstain from owning televisions.
