When I've "become a fan" of things on Facebook it's been because I was interested in those things and wanted regular updates about them. It was not out of some kind of weird desire to flash my tailfeathers at people.

Well, yeah, people are getting kind of twitchy about Facebook privacy issues. It's like Water Torture -- the individual drops of water are basically harmless but they just keep falling and you have no idea when the next one's coming . Most

Since I got my iPod touch eight or nine months ago, easily 3/4 of my recreational web browsing has moved to the Touch. I frequent a couple of VBulletin-based sites that are just too painful to use that way, and I still use the PC for a lot

Yeah, and here's the nightmare scenario for Apple: what if the prototype is actually for iPhone 2011 instead of iPhone 2010? Everyone expects a front-facing camera in the next release now. Wanna take bets on what happens to Apple's share pr

Yeah -- #3. Where are you getting this from? And what does your parenthetical "(Or Apple would have denied it and requested that they return the equipment.)" even mean? It's true that the warrant was executed as part of the investigatio

Powell doesn't "admit" that he was drunk, or that he left the phone at the bar, at any point in that story.

This assumes that it's actually "the company" laying down this directive, which isn't clear from the post -- it could just as easily be something his manager came up with on his own. Having said that, I wouldn't expend too much energy on tr

If Car & Driver bought a Ferrari prototype from someone who clearly wasn't its legal owner, then ran a big front-page teardown story on the car with a snarky sidebar about how stupid it was for Ferrari to "lose" it, do you really thin

We already protect one and not the other. If the seller had only provided Gizmodo with the information they published (photos, teardowns, etc.) instead of the phone itself, Gizmodo probably wouldn't be in any legal trouble and the seller's

The question's not whether or not bloggers count as journalists for the purposes of the shield laws, it's whether or not the shield laws apply when the journalists themselves are under suspicion of committing a crime.

I don't think Powell's public silence to date indicates anything other than the fact that Apple hasn't authorized him to discuss it in public. (Most large companies wouldn't under the circumstances, it's not an Apple thing.) If the phone

Again, the only source of the "left in a bar" story is Gizmodo. That may be the story the seller told them, but it hasn't been confirmed by anyone else. If the seller "acquired" it by more overt means, they have plenty of reason to lie abou

There's also the problem that the "found on a barstool" story came from the guy who sold it to Gizmodo. Gruber hints at another possibility, but let me just lay it out explicitly: 1. Powell takes the photo that he posted to Facebook, but us

Well, that's certainly the story as Gizmodo reports it. Unfortunately it comes from a source with plenty of reason to lie about the details, and can't be verified as nobody outside of Gizmodo knows who that source is. It also leaves open th

At the time, you weren't allowed to hook arbitrary equipment up to the phone system -- everything had to be approved by AT&T. IIRC the hardware Woz used for his dial-a-joke setup was homebrew.
