I hear Sitka is lovely this time of year. (Explaining the joke: that's where the alternate history in _The Yiddish Policemen's Union_ put its post-WW2 Jewish diaspora.)

The USB-C laptops just use straight up USB-PD, thankfully, and don't have any DRM or other controls. I've charged my USB-C XPS 13 off an assortment of Apple, Dell, and generic chargers.

I bet you have the same accent as most of the people you deal with. I do not, having moved halfway around the world, and doing things over the phone is often surprisingly painful.

Jitsi can work in either peer-to-peer mode or with a "videobridge" that acts as a server in much the same style as Zoom et al.

That's what my girlfriend and I have done for the last seven years. You have to agree on what's a "joint" expense, but provided you work that out, it's a very simple way of handling shared finances.

At this point, it might even just be an Oregon and Washington thing: if anything, it was the year of sours in BC. There are still breweries pumping out ten different IPAs, but most seem to have pulled back to a couple of core varieties and

WebAssembly is explicitly disabled on the ESR version of Firefox 52, per https://www.caniuse.com/#search=webassembly , so that would explain that.

It's definitely below what you get with a true VPN, but it's a great option when combined with an SSH server listening on port 443 to get any kind of "VPN" on a locked down network (like most airport WiFi, for example).

I don't use LastPass, but one thing that impresses me about their blog post: they didn't hide behind "your passwords are hashed" or something equally weaselly, but instead said exactly and clearly how passwords are hashe

It appears they were running SMF, so in this case "hashed" means "a single iteration of SHA-1 after salting with the username"[1]. Ugh. Hopefully nobody was using a password they used elsewhere. [1] https://gi

I suspect this'll be the basis of a new major version, based on early discussions. It probably won't be a 5.x release.

An update has been posted on this: http://php.net/archive/2013.php#id2013-10-24-1 tl;dr: Relevant services moved to new servers; investigation continuing. Post mortem to follow once that's done.

So far so good — I threw a 1080p file at it last night and it did fine. Admittedly, most of my content is in 720p, because that was about all the Apple TV I used to use could deal with.

I couldn't agree more: mine runs XBMC well and, for me, is worth the $100 just for that. That there are emulators that work well and some fun games are pure bonuses, really. It's something that slots in alongside other consoles ra

The mysql_* function API is part of ext/mysql and is deprecated — mysqlnd is a lower level library that basically replaces libmysqlclient in the stack (and is used from PDO and mysqli as well). I'd be interested in a cite on the licensing i

Unfortunately, the obvious answer (parse code in the C locale) breaks code that's in the wild and relies on PHP's undocumented locale-specific case-insensitivity. Obviously, case-insensitive identifiers are a bad idea, but PHP is stuck with
