So what? You know your phone visited a website, but if that site had a zero-day, would it matter?

I realize this is the actual title of the piece, but it's going to get much fewer views/reads because of it. For the sake of HN readers, it might be worth editorializing this title to add some kind of context.

> Can I email StartSSL or VeriSign and ask them to revoke faceb00k.com? I think so, yes. I don't have any direct evidence to back this, but my intuition is yes, they would contact the intermediary cert issuer and request the cert

In theory, at least, a fraud website like faceb00k.com wouldn't be able to maintain a green padlock for very long because the issuer will revoke the cert. Not saying that's a solution, but it mitigates the problem somewhat.

I've been waiting for a very long time for pact, looking forward to trying it when I get home. All I really need is a terminal that, once I ssh to a *nix box, won't get in the way.

I don't think shame is an effective tactic, because it has no real "stick" component. People will always do what they can. The only way to stop someone from doing something is to make them unable to do it. That's not s

When looking at founder groups, do you shy away from or gravitate towards founders who were friends before the company/idea?

I don't understand why respect would be part of this, or loyalty, patriotism, or whatever. Do you really think the best strategy to defend against an adversary is to shame them into behaving? This is about what's cryptographicall

Doesn't it blow your mind that there are no "standards of engineering" or whatever for software? There's no licensure body for software engineers who build software running your car, and therefore no accountability on a

I don't agree! I think much worse things would have to happen to dissolve the FDIC than would have to happen to lose a significant portion of your investments in the bond/stock/real estate markets.

You are, as far as I know, entirely correct. I still think the survey was designed specifically to find these people who exist in this manner, and I think your criticisms are valid when placed against the thrust of the survey.

You're the second person to say this, but how would "cash in savings" be equally worthless? Maybe I'm not understanding, but it's pretty difficult to actually lose money in a savings account, that's the whole

I'm sorry you don't follow, but it should be fairly obvious that stocks can crash, bond markets can collapse, and home prices can plummet, whereas money in FDIC insured savings accounts would only be lost in the event of a catastr

You're exactly the kind of person this article is pointing out, because your ability to be wiped away by the market is a precarious position to be in.

I said this in another comment, but based on what Alexis said here, it seems like there might actually be staffers (reporters) doing additional research into the stories as they appear on upvoted.com.
