I grew up during the "computer revolution" and saw the internet enter our lives. I was sure that digitizing information and all of the "zero-cost copies" was clearly the way to make information available to everyone, for

I’ll unsubscribe, but now call BS on the “this may take 14 days to take effect…” nonsense in 2024. If I’m getting more emails in a couple of days, they’re getting marked as spam. (Looking at you, TripAdvisor. If you can figure out how to bu

The (most?) popular SQLite driver for Go often gets PRs to update the SQLite C amalgamation, which the owner politely declines (and I appreciate him for that stance, and for taking on the maintenance burden it brings). e.g., https:/&#

Yet https://cryptopals.com exists... Given that this is a person interested in cryptography trying something for an experiment, I don't think it deserves the "don't roll your own" hammer.

Maybe they are all relevant upon full scrutiny, but that isn't obvious to me (albeit IANAL). I know what my kids buying a potentially violent video game is like, and I know it is very different than participating in social media. And

These rulings are 13 and 27 years old (the third is in progress), so I'd argue that revisiting the legal analysis of the laws and precedents is useful here in itself.

Let the experiment take place, I say. Just like Oregon’s now-repealed drug use decriminalization bill. It didn’t achieve its intended goals, but there is now a mass of data about what assumptions were wrong, implementation issues, etc. IMO

Given that Things, Todoist, TickTick, and probably most(?) others don't support e2ee, I'd not consider it table stakes. If anything it could be a positive differentiator if they did add it, since folks in the forums for other apps

Yeah this is important for planning, and it becomes even more complicated when you're trying to optimize with AMT involved, reclaiming credits, etc. These things require multi-year planning, and the expected tax bracket is a significan

I’m sort off in your boat, I think. Late 40s and quite tired of the tech rat race and money obsession. I’m about 6 months into a totally different thing: writing/selling my own apps (mobile). I have the luxury of a working spouse and s

These seem more like notch filters and I’m hoping they work. At least they are trying something, and a large scale experiment can only help figure this out (even through failure).

This is an overly negative (“ruined the internet…”) take on the interface. I just tried it. I get a nice summary answer that has an “AI generated” disclaimer, and immediately below are actual reviews mentioning my search terms. If anything

My state of Oregon paid Oracle something like $250M for a healthcare system that never materialized. The lawsuit that followed was settled for $100M, but most of that was “free” Oracle licenses and no less than $60M of customer support.

Small bug: for today's (3/5) puzzle, the autocomplete lists two of the same correct answer (identical text). The first one is a win, the second a loss.

I like the idea of plaintext accounting and have tried a few of these options a number of times, sometimes pretty earnestly, but have never landed on a satisfactory flow. I've always ended up spending quite a lot of time building out

I'm using a standard T-Mobile prepaid plan with my name on it, auto-paid monthly using a CC with my name on it. The silly part is that this same phone is what they: a) registered my account with a few years ago, b) send their 2FA codes

I've purchased "Due" via the App Store, and it tells me I'm entitled to free feature upgrades for 1 year, shows a date when my unlock period expires, and offers a longer-term subscription. So it must be possible.
