Your views are intriguing and I wish to subscribe your news letter. But seriously, I've been thinking about an append-only files + memory indexed DB for the past couple of weeks - any prior art or links or papers or anything, lay it on

Almost everything I use now is either in the terminal or a browser/electron app. I do miss native gui elements that were respectful of your screen real estate.

I'm curious then what the physical ceiling is to this global floor, in terms of latency and bandwidth.

Thank you for this context. The site says "Voice and Data Starting 2025", I do wonder what will change by then.

Is this as good as it appears? Is the answer to connectivity to every remote deployment of tech just "use starlink direct"?

Zig is getting there. Very ergonomic at doing the kind of bit bashing stuff people might reach to C for. It's about as easy to use C libraries in Zig as it is in C++.

How much of a standard do ULIDS need? 6 byte timestamp, 10 bytes crypto randomness, stringify it using crockfords base 62 - and off we go.

The reason I ask is because I'm always looking for material around this kind of thing. I read the Hybrid Logical Clocks paper from the university of Buffalo, but then found it if one of your clocks is inaccurate all your timestamps get

I feel like it's well beyond the scope of UUIDs to get into "are your clocks really monotonic?". They give you 48 bits for a timestamp, what that timestamp signifies (transactional time, valid time...) and how that's gen

Why use UUIDv7 over ULIDs? As Lazare points out in this thread they're basically the same thing, except with ULIDs you get those 6 extra bits of randomness back that UUIDs have to use for metadata.

I feel like this has been misunderstood for years. I note this paragraph: But what I’m aiming for there is not technology that’s “boring” the way CSPAN is boring. I mean that it’s boring in the sense that it’s well understood. It’s bad, bu

I did a search, and 9% of Californias workforce are undocumented. So you're just likely to see a shift away from the de jure workforce to the de facto workforce, since the costs are lower.

Livestock in AU and NZ is grass-fed almost exclusively. I know in the US they often feed their cattle corn, is it the same for sheep?

I live in a rural area, but we have no butcher shops and eat supermarket meat. There are one or two butchers, but you basically have to bring your own animal.

You're absolutely right - they could just keep the conflicting versions without notifying users in the UI if that was really their concern.

Looked into this. Apple chose a sync strategy that will lose users data in certain conditions, so they didn't "bother" users about conflicts too much. They opted not to use much older techniques that would have kept conflicti

Lazy take. Node.js is fast, mature, and gives you an in-built editor scripting language for free. ...I mean it's not my favourite, but acting like that's some kind of massive barrier to users of a CLI editor is an overreaction.

A brief wikipedia search suggests a lot of humanity has Neanderthal DNA, not just Europeans. Neanderthals shared more alleles with Eurasian populations (e.g. French, Han Chinese, and Papua New Guinean) than with sub-Saharan African populat

Some very smart people working on this - Annette Bieniusa comes to mind, who has done a lot of research on CRDTs. Excited to take a closer look.
