Alright, so we have motive, means, and opportunity. Seems fairly likely it was deliberate.

Right so I suppose any idiot can just drag an anchor until it cuts something. I am doing an amateur job trying to triangulate from that under sea cable map to google earth with sea depth, but it looks like everything around there is no more

Can anyone with any maritime knowledge answer: 1) How easy would it be to deliberately time an anchor drop to damage a cable? 2) Why would a ship drop anchor outside a port? Is this a malfunction that happens a lot, or is it rare/unhea

I remember this and this really disillusioned me wrt to the so called left/right divide. At the very beginning it was considered a right wing thing to worry about viruses, and doing so was linked to anti-chinese racism. Then it all fli

COVID was such a waste of a catastrophe. We all briefly figured out that maybe people who work at a computer all day don't actually need to travel every day to a special computer in a special building. And that we don't need mass

I suppose by "new reality" I meant that asynchronicity seems to be happening from both above (programming lagnauges) and below (hardware and I suppose..physics), and then in the middle we still have units of execution pausing on s

Yes you're actually not the first person to mention microkernels to me, when I've ranted about this stuff. How do they do syscalls? Is every one basically an IPC?

This isn't my first interaction with Kragen on this site, so unfortunately I'm not sure all his criticisms are genuine. He's said a few interesting things, but the amount of stuff he's written about my post is well over

The node.js std lib has had async versions of some of their modules for a while, eg fs/promise[1] I know node.js uses epoll but I am pretty sure bun uses io_uring. Also worth mentioning Zig has a realy great iouring library[2] right in

You know I'm not sure how many io_uring loops you'd need. If any wandering systems programmers around, could you tell us if there's any advantage to having more than one per process?

The fact I even got into this is Joe Armstrong's fault. I was listening to his talk about programming multicores and thought "you know I'm on-board with the actor model across the network, but what's the point of having

It's more shifting the view point. CRDTs are not just something you 'use'. They are laws a system must be obey to achieve strong eventual consistency . Eventual Consistency: If Node A and Node B have received the same set

Yeah that could be it. (I'm idly speculating without any knowledge or research. It's just unlike a lot of people here I admit it) Maybe there's some ideal ratio between "current novelty levels" and "number of P

I get the impression one year masters, 3 year PHDs, etc, were much more common in the mid 20th century. I presume financial incentives dragged out how long degrees like this take now. That, or everyone is dumber, which seems unlikely.

There are equations/properties for data that syncs nicely and allows mutli-master writes. Ie, if your merges follow a few simple properties, this stuff will work. These are basically what CRDTs are. And I know what you're thinking

Thanks for this. I used to use ruby a lot - mostly just because it's the nicest language for scripting things on unix. I can remember trying to get it set up a year or so ago and finding the process difficult (think I was using rvm).

Zig has a singular focus on doing low level systems programming and it shows. Rust is very nice for systems programming, but it's not as ergonomic as Zig at all. Of course, it's a much nicer and more comfortable general purpose la
