> because some job fits being its own service Determining this at all takes skill. Determining it that far ahead of time requires so much skill and foresight that suggesting that people try is bad advice.

Comparing with self-hosting or renting a server is just dishonest. At that point you may as well compare with spinning up an actual EC2 instance. Your alternatives miss the main original value proposition of EC2 altogether, let alone spot i

AWS will tell you as much as you want to know about how munch you’re spending. Cost breakdowns and billing alerts are more configurable than you’ll see pretty much anywhere else. This is a miscategorisation of the problem with AWS billing.

Really sounds to me like you’re speaking from your own professional context and are talking to consider the huge spectrum of circumstances in which web code is written.

Yeah. As someone that’s quite bearish on JS altogether, and as someone that’s worked on a few old-school multi-step forms recently, we can’t pretend that this was and still is anything other than a code and UX disaster. And…I’m not an idiot

Understanding them probably isn’t as important (or as likely) as someone- the right person-simply being held responsible for their actions, or for relying on them.

Amen. After suffering through many years of people telling me to use document databases when I was much better served with—at most—Postgres with a jsonb field, I feel vindicated enough to feel justified in doing my due diligence before goin

Nowhere in your comment do you consider the possibility that some of these employees were doing something that just didn’t matter.

It’ll be a very confusing day for you when you grow up and have just one direct report, and you’ll need to face the reality of them calling you “management” on snarky Hacker News comments.

This is like hearing that your aunt bought an iPhone and ridiculing them because the latest Samsung fire hazard has more megahertz of RAMs. Nobody cares, and if you aren’t tying this to user value from the get-go, you’re fighting a losing b

Yeah and who’s doing the training for that? Your Grandma’s iPad? This stuff is hard, and it’s incredibly easy to sit here on Hacker News talking about how things will be when we finally get to the fireworks factory. But for the time being,

Sorry but this is well and truly into the realm of unsubstantiated and unrealistic conspiracy theory. OpenAI can basically do whatever the hell they want here. I imagine there might be more favourable terms for the big kids. But for your av

I like to think that Waltzing Matilda is much more understood than Born In The USA. It’s a bit more in the Aussie culture to run with something like that. The Born In the USA American crowd on the other hand self-identifies is infallible an

Yeah. I lock my front door at night, despite it being perfect. This is such a blindspot for ‘24/7 engineer mindset’ people. And, in a professional context, things like this serve as a great litmus test for if someone is capable and gea

I got my uni CS club going on IRC. I’ve recently discovered that they’re now on Discord. I get it, like, IRC is increasingly undesirable these days, especially without a bouncer. It still hurt though.

I am 100% sure I had some petty manually-initiated retaliatory action taken against me by a sysadmin at my university. I never heard a peep through any channel, official or otherwise.

Completely lost on me “babying kids and not showing them that actions can have consequences” is fetishised as soon as computers are involved. I guess because we all grew up doing this stuff. As an adult that writes software used by a lot of
