My personal reason was observing the huge amount of investments into Javascript and its infrastructure (by Google and others). After Node.js was released it was a rational bet to make that Javascript would dominate, both server and client s

My point was regarding the "no censorship in Scandinavia" comment that I replied to. The rest of your arguments are just ramblings about you not caring about individual freedom. You even justify their actions using your own made u

You're just lucky YOU aren't affected yet. Try telling that norwegian poker player who is unable to wire legal poker earnings from a tournament abroad to his bank home. Or to any of the people who made money on crypto who they wan

In 2016, I identified and wrote about the lack of retina support for Gimp here https://artplusmarketing.com/gimp-and-inkscape-on-retina-mac... . I know Inkscape got retina support since then, but as I understood it, Gimp wa

I'm all for using free / open source where it makes sense and is cost effective. And frankly, Office is probably overkill for most of the actual needs of users. Having said that, I tried making a three page brochure a year ago, us

LG had good phones. But while most other phones allowed some minor cracks in their glass, the earlier LGs did not. One minor crack and the touch UI would stop working (they fused the touch sensor to the glass or something). They insisted on

Yeah, except I guess 98% of HiDPI users are on MacOS, a platform they are currently unable to create builds for.

And I'm sure that makes sense if you have lots of users and low revenue per customer. If your use case is the opposite, tracking individual usage becomes more important. At least until you have lots of those users. After that, who care

Thanks for the tip. One of Heap's selling points seems to be that tracking events "manually" is over, everything is automatic. That might work if all "work" is defined as "stuff users do". For other types

I was recently looking for a good tool that supports both web site analytics and app analytics (custom events, typically pushed by SPAs). I looked at GA, Amplitude and finally Matomo (which I ended up with). GA and Amplitude either did not

Requiring people to have a Google account or similar is probably the primary reason why competitors such as Zoom had any chance to begin with. They can call it a security feature as much as they like, though I suspect "loss leader"

If I read it right, they still require everybody joining to have a Google account. Which means the others that don't require this will keep growing. I mean, we're a Google shop ok, but requiring our customers to use google account

Disregarding the history behind js2-mode, if it has been decided that Emacs 27 will feature a much improved js-mode, I was just puzzled that it wasn't put into 26.x as a package already. I couldn't remember the name of Yamamoto, w

Consider the poor quality of the existing js modes for 26.x, any idea why this depends on a future version of Emacs instead of current versions? Alternatively, could somebody convince the author of the railwaycat port (Emacs with better mac

I doubt the climate in Netherlands is comparable. A week here and there with snow doesn't even compare. The pro car ban people mostly argue that if only the public transportation gets good enough, cars aren't needed. That remains

What the PR piece doesn't show is that during winter (4-6 months a year), very few ride bicycles around. In winter most people don't stay outside a lot, the weather is harsh (people do ski, but not inside the cities). They have in

It's true for anything with a GUI using GTK or similar. For cmdline, macOS is generally a lot better. WSL is getting really good as well, so cmdline on Windows (well, it's actually Linux, but running on Windows) is getting really

If you're the only developer, do what you want. If not, don't do what you want but what is best for the project. Which probably isn't what you want. ;-)

If you're fed up with Macs, chances are you want a beautiful "modern" device with a hidpi touch screen. I haven't used Linux as a primary dev machine for a few years now, but last time I looked, support for all of these

Be aware, if you recommend GIMP to people on Macs with retina screens they are going to be very disappointed. TLDR; retina screens on Macs simply aren't supported properly (everything you do will be at a minimum of 2x scale). See http

Ubuntu on Linux gives you a decent commandline, not a whole lot more. Still some questions on upgrades etc ("apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" typically fails badly). What about Linux software with GUIs, or ports of such?
