Damn, being 41 years old I thought I finally find a ".com" that wasn't practicing ageism! Guess I'll have to take my 15 long years of perl experience and keep looking!

Most of our servers are DB anyways. We have 2 load balancers, 6 web servers, and ~40 DB servers. Wow, that's not what I was expecting. I have no idea if those 40 DBs are just mirrors sharing the load of some heavy queries or you are shard

There's also the option of splitting your app between EC2 and your own servers, so you can run the more ephemeral stuff like web servers and caching in the cloud and the bedrock stuff like databases on your own quality hardware. Then you'll

I have very very limited experience with EC2, a single small instance, for over a month, but I think that gives me more credibility when I say this, don't use EC2 unless you designed your whole app to run on servers you expect to catch fire

I'm guessing you are going to stick to "web development", in which case, knowing C++ is irrelevant. In the case of python and ruby, while these jobs are high profile, they are relatively rare at the moment, especially python. Java and ASP s

Confused - this looks suspiciously like the craigslist ad that says this is a 3-6 month contract. I'm also getting calls from headhunters saying this is a 6 month contract. Well I sent you my resume twice and a bulleted list of how there m

I used to play world of warcraft, nothing like that level of immersion to relax in respect to real life, but it might just replace real life tension with virtual tension. Until the new expansion pack comes out I find myself just watching TV

I'd like to know the answer to this also, but after reading the comments I'm still clueless. Maybe this will help - Has anybody dared to do any A/B testing on professional vs "unprofessional" design?

This was a few years ago, so my memory is foggy and things might have changed, but I remember how uncomfortable erlang felt in a unix environment. I might have felt the same way about java, since its also sandboxy. I think the first time I

I built a very specialized mail server (MTA). It was a tedious, frustrating experience, even though you'd think it would be the perfect language. It ended up being too slow (probably because of all the string processing) In my entire progra

I agree with the OP and not with you. What you are doing is arbitrarily selecting a subset of qualified employees. It _looks_ like it works for you, but its probably not efficient, and can probably go wrong. When a developer is screened w
