As a novice at self-hosting, I previously attempted to use it, but got stuck as I didn't understand MySQL, and learning it just for Gitea was too much. However, I've had some progress with with another database recently, so I woul

As the other responder said, don't use Anki for memorization, only for reviewing what you already remember. I recommend using mnemonics for memorizing words. For katakana hiragana, refer to https://www.tofugu.com/japan

Let's be honest, Duolingo is a joke in comparison to anything serious like Anki. I agree that Anki alone doesn't cover it. One has to immerse in the target language to make progress. Anki is only there to speed up the process.

There is an important thing to note: Loci is for memorization. Spaced repetition is for retaining knowledge you already memorized. What you memorize with Loki will be forgotten, no matter how good the method is. And spaced repetition alone

An alternative to randomness is handicap. For example, Go game has ranks and based on them either you or your opponent get a handicap. Equal ranked players don't use handicap. It is counted that a stone of handicap is worth ~6.5 points

I love IVAN due to its difficulty(spend hours building character, get killed by invisible landmine) and polish(got a banana? Make a banana sword!). The little carcastic plot is fun as well.
