That's what the term "formally equivalent" means here. You can do whatever you can do with one of them, with the other one. Actors as well.

No, a cult leader would say that nobody outside the group is free. Only the group is free, and the freedom comes from the cult-leader in some way (flavor that last part to the kind of cult).

Our willingness to do things in non-efficient ways is one of the ways we consume so many resources.

Never underestimate humanities ability to consume resources. They thought the US had enough land that it would take 20 generations to settle (it took 2). That being said, we should probably still do it. Seems like a slower death route.

I believe the equivalent here means formally equivalent. But, really, you can use each of them to emulate the other. If you want to emulate objects with functions, you just have your function return a bag of closures over the state. Your fi

There is a difference between consensus around something new and consensus around something that's been studied for a hundred years. They can definitely both be wrong, but one is a lot more likely to change in the near future.

Of course there is. You can generate studies that show roughly anything. It may not be the majority, but if the research is all done in-house by various firms, there's no way for anyone to know that.

I think people don't realize how much of the economy relies on agreements to not be a piece of shit. Sort of like the highway system relies on an agreement not to play bumper-cars. There's nothing actually stopping anyone.

There's not one network with mastodon. Depending on which node you start in, you can get different graphs (from what I remember, mostly due to differences in value between valuing free speech vs preventing hate speech).
