I would argue that the marketplace isn't well standardized, but rather that some information information (eg. on practices related to domain transfer and takedown) is unavailable to or ignored by most of the consumers in the market, causing

I find it ironic that the tone gets so bellicose at times, and also kind of wonder what the purpose of the implied threat at the end was in an article that started out so reasonably.

Lithium ion batteries, such as those in laptops, don't degrade based on charge/discharge cycles the way that older generations (NiCd, NiMH etc) did, but rather lose permanent capacity mostly as a function of time and temperature (although d

A conventionally tipped ICBM is indistinguishable from a nuclear tipped ICBM in all stages of flight except perhaps the last, and thus the launch thereof at a CVG could provoke nuclear retaliation. There are many, many better ways to sink

The naughtiness stuff works on HN despite this, probably since you can't downvote articles and an article eventually getting flagged into deep space doesn't negate the upvotes it received beforehand. The system relies on humans not rewardi

How long have Australian police been in the habit of reading suspects their Miranda rights (or are they required to)? I'm really curious how that made it from our law to theirs.

Oddly enough, I usually hear this the other way around - that if you work on a product that makes the company money directly (shrinkwrap software for a software company, HFT shit for a financial firm, etc) that you'll generally be treated (

While Perl is an eclectic language and has the kitchen-sink nature, the only thing it really bolted on without much forethought was its object system, which it borrowed from circa-1994 Python. Unfortunately for Perl, this wasn't just bolte

Good to see that Watson is making the transition to a useful expert system/aid-to-humans quickly; and interesting to see that David Ferrucci's and Chris Welty's comments about adapting Watson from Jeopardy use to medical use came to fruitio

I am skeptical of the claim that verbosity for its own sake aids comprehension. To borrow an example from Rob Pike, reading buf[thisVariableIsTheLoopIndex] = foo(...); is no more obvious than buf[i] = foo(...); and indeed is mo

I think you've conflated "not trusting" user data with sanitizing it. To use an analogy from SQL, using prepared statements/parameterized queries doesn't sanitize user data, but it also doesn't trust it (as it doesn't treat data as code).
