[OP] Active vs static/passive protocols is a big scaling, security, and maintenance problem. I wrote about it previously [1] and proposed adding a static option to ActivityPub and was flatly denied. [1] https://justingarriso

[OP] the reason I pointed that out is because public figures (reporters, celebs) can't risk that. If a server is hacked and their private key is stolen you could post anything you want as them. Of course twitter has had the same proble

[OP] Bluesky/AT protocol solves this by making identity a DNS domain verified with TXT record. That's also 1. unsquatable 2. universal across apps My Bluesky name is my site justingarrison.com and it can be that on any other sites

[OP] Can someone explain to me why when I submit my articles to HN [1] they are mostly ignored but when other people submit them they go to front page? Why is there no automatic post merging? It’s really hard to keep track of replies and en

I don't disagree. Forums is a great example although each one is an island of information for specific communities. Do you have any stats about if forums are growing in users? I used them for decades, but can't remember the last t

The decoder interview touched on that and he said they have no plans for that model. Right now all of the larger instances have a variety of ways to get donations. I agree it would be better if it were integrated into the app to make it eas

Glad it helped. My goal is to make a static site/mastodon bridge too. I'm working on the /inbox portion next and then will tackle the outbox stuff in a future post.

If you want a powerful and cheap cluster I recommend getting old enterprise desktops. They work great. I have a full post about options here (it's a bit old but still relevant) https://rothgar.medium.com/on-prem-develop
