Some care is needed to not conflate "overhyped" with "useless". There are plenty of software engineering technologies who haven't lived up to the hype because expectations were set way too high. They are however extremely useful. I was taki

I didn't intend for that comment to sound quite as snarky as it did. But my point is that real time speech translation needs to work precisely in those situations. Voice recognition and computerized translation have been around for a while.

Yeah, this is especially painful as a long-time iPhone on AT&T customer. If I want to tether, I have to pay more a month and I lose my grandfathered unlimited data plan.

While this is cool from a techie perspective, I can't imagine mass market appeal for a dual booting tablet. Most average users have trouble with one operating system, let alone two. One of the great things about all the recent innovation in

I have recently observed that buying and using ebooks is like being put into a time machine and being forced to re-live the early days of digital music downloads. Do we seriously have to re-learn all those lessons in every single industry t

I know your last point is meant to be sarcastic, but that is the exact sort of distorted behavior you get with these kinds of ill-conceived regulations.

While I think HN should have this too, I think you're setting that cost pretty low. I've often wished there was a way to post (non-YC, non-startup) jobs to HN. It would be at least as good as if not more effective than what you get from a p

I profoundly disagree with many of Stallman's opinions. However I have tremendous respect for his timing and ability to capitalize on the buzz surrounding something new, and use it as an opportunity to re-state his position.

There is a link in the article to a more detailed description of the process. Basically, the viruses are used as a structural component that is then coated with metal. They claim the viruses are inert after the process but don't elaborate.

While you may be correct about the budget deficit of Texas (there is some confusion since they budget on 2 year cycles), the unemployment rate there is most definitely not higher than California. A quick google search shows 7.9% for TX and

I haven't searched it too much, but I suspect a lot of devs are just not interested in wading through the licensing swamp. For some commercial databases, the vendor may or may not allow for linking their drivers without a licensing deal. Fo

Anyone in the know have any sense of whether or not this is "channel sutffing" or whatever it's called? I'm not saying that's the case here, it's just that red flags go up every time I see the word "shipped" instead of "sold".
