Firefox used to show a custom page when an RSS feed was displayed, but it doesn't seem to work any more. Edit: it didn't seem to work earlier, but is working now after I added the RSS subscriptions button.

It's more complicated than that. People can't defend themselves against that kind of manipulation. It's extremely difficult to leave that site, because they have you put all of your social connections/interactions into t

I wonder if Firefox could help fix the problem by putting RSS/Atom discovery into the browser in a prominent way.

> The inability to publish ads inline RSS ultimately killed it. Google (partly) killed it (by pulling people into Google Reader and then killing Google Reader). Most (all?) news sites still offer RSS feeds.

What limitations are those? HTML is great for what it's supposed to do (allow anyone to publish and distribute content online). RSS/Atom is great for what it does too.

The thing that caused RSS to fall out of favor is that most people were using Google Reader to consume it, and Google killed off Google Reader.

That's another problem with URL trimming by browsers -- users sometimes see the protocol and sometimes don't. It doesn't make much sense.

And regarding the commitment not to support FB, it's because using FB's software supports FB, and FB is terrible for society. I don't want to support them (wherever possible), even if just in a small way. https://w

I've never seen a site that doesn't serve a root path. You can't serve a homepage at http://example.comindex.html . I'd be curious to see if it's possible to serve one at http://example.com?pag

The first one is not the real URL that you're visiting. Go to Firefox and turn off URL trimming or open the browser console and type window.location.pathname. The server will add the trailing slash, but the browser will pretend that it

As far as I know, the only browser that shows real URLs is Firefox, and you have to visit about:config and set browser.urlbar.trimURLs to false in order to see them. Hiding how URLs work is a terrible trend. Users should be educated, not tr

Not showing complete URLs and de-emphasizing URLs are not good ideas. Safari's way of doing things is terrible. Chrome hides the HTTP and chops off trailing slashes. Firefox puts the <title> text before the URLs in the completion

This doesn't really make sense. Isn't machine learning already good enough to detect nude photos? If nude photos are not allowed on Facebook, why do they need hashes of your specific photos? They could identify all nude photos wit

I love HN's design. It's the "Craig's List school of design" -- simple presentation of information with no distractions. The WWW has been heading in a terrible direction (animation, over-saturated colors) over the p

I think that not everyone can be a large-scale architect, but those numbers can be increased. People can be taught to at least think like architects in order to make better choices in life and understand when and how they are being manipula
