Open, but not immediately, I believe. Journals have an embargo period of 1-3 years, and after that you can put the accepted paper on a free repository. Your manuscript can usually be posted for free as soon as you want.

In Spain, where the system is similar to what you described (staff for the day is chosen at random from all citizens in that voting district, and similar to jury duty), some professionals (doctors, nurses, air controllers, etc.) can decline

I remember that I had a Synaptics driver on my old XPS laptop that allowed to customize three-fingers actions, so probably should be doable in other environments!

Tangential: it always annoys me how difficult it is to highlight text in a Google blog post and look it up. Drag doesn't work and right click clears the selection. My only working approach is highlight and hit menu key.

The currently implicit trade of personal and behavioral data for services such as Facebook, Google, etc. is IMHO a domain in urgent need of some regulation.

In Chrome the Youtube video that is used as alarm sound won't play until the tab is active, so if you are not looking at the browser and catch the tab flashing red, you won't notice.

You joke, but if you make the mistake of looking at a possible present in a non-incognito window, Amazon ads will now obnoxiously feature said present in all websites that you visit...

Curiously for me it's the opposite, I like very much the default Unity (14.04) font / anti-aliasing / rendering, I find it is much easier/pleasant to read that the default in Windows (Segoe UI?), bolder and "smoothe

It is shown in the video that the turnstile scans a QR code presented in the screen of the app. So if that's the only interaction (no idea!) it seems that the phone could be replaced by an NFC card or similar "dumb" device.

It's interesting that they talk abut a supported smartphone. If it was just computer vision looking at what you grab you would only need a printed card with the QR that the folk in the video uses to check-in. So, probably there's
