It just happens by means of taxes instead. Right now, banks get a pretty hefty profit off those that can't afford it upfront, it's a tax on the poor (and often middle class) more than the rich.

All Microsoft research (or at least a huge chunk of it) is published in open journals. I can't say the same for acadamia.

Microsoft research is nearly legendary in many academic circles. As prestigious as many top colleges. There are many brilliant people working there. Admittadely, the prestige probably has a lot to do with the previous circumstances (work on

The author didn't seem to refute that placebo with some amount of deception could have moderately significant positive effects on subjective diseases such as pain / depression. Not that alternative medicine is ethical due to that,

Anecdotally, a friend of mine had a chemistry education at a top 50 school and went straight to a PhD program at an ivy league where they have had no trouble keeping up.

I doubt its just at work; the silicon valley area itself may be a bad culture fit. From experience, when you don't have people that you relate to face-to-face at home; it gets very depressing. You personally are likely to find people y

I went to middle school in a majority black school. In all honesty, most of the white kids were in the honors courses and generally segregated from everyone else. In high school I chilled with more black people because the area was very cou

I can't speak for chemistry, but this is a horrificly shitty thing. There are many factors influencing what schools a student chooses to attend. Finances being an important one.

Have you ever seen how much Microsoft will pay you? Those sort of people often end up as very good programmers. Not that surprised that people in this camp end up working at Microsoft and then quit because they don't like working there

My mom (55 yo) always tries to get me into her computer buying arguments with my dad. She recently called me and stated "Macs never break compared to windows, so I should get a mac." I use Linux almost exclusively these days, so I

In a weird way it manages to fix many people's problems with advertising. Ads are sometimes horribly intrusive (to the point that ad-blockers are necessary to me) and it forces companies to adhere to some kind standards when none are t

Poverty is a fun issue because (typically) solving poverty has resulted in greater population and thus trends towards poverty. Less true in modern nations, but its still generally true.

Anecdote, yu-gi-oh; bey-blades; etc. People in general don't really realise the impact that advertising has on them even if they are aware of them.

Out of curiosity, in what situations does knowing the squares benefit someone later in mathematics / life? Actually curious.

We call it memoization when it's for computers. People need 0-9 for basic algorithm, 10 is useful for decimals / notation, 11 is easy to learn and 12 is debatable, but potentially handy for base 12 systems which are fairly common.

An odd, but very enjoyable and in depth commentary of the DOOM modding community and DOOM in general is done by Liz Ryerson in her "DOOM mixtape" series. I think the later tapes are more interesting, but feel free to skip around.
