Isn't it that if you write standard compliant C code, much less compilers come into the picture ;)

In my opinion "cultural fit" is important, but it has to be about work culture. For instance: are you comfortable with code reviews (or lack of thereof), coding standards, how are you positioning yourself with respect to pressur

It's a narrow view: it's about the major label making maths and thinking that it was in their benefit to get as many paying users as possible on the service as quickly as possible, and three months free is a great way to do it.

It looks to me like this reasoning is laughable. It looks like the same reasoning as when the major are counting every single pirated song as a "missing sale". Like if it would have translated in a sale otherwise... The three mont

There is difference between rewriting a "published" history from your local repo. I am heavily relying the ability to rewrite history before pushing. I hate seeing people pushing a series of commits (in a single push I mean) whe

I'm not sure what you mean here, if you have a volatile pointer that points to a memory buffer returned by malloc, how can the compiler prevents a write through the pointer from happening? Edit: unless your point is a temporary copy ca

I believe volatile force the compiler to issue a real write to memory and can't be optimized away.

I don't get it, the compiler operates within the memory model specified by the language. If it "optimizes" a memset it does not change the behavior of the program (or it is a bug in the compiler which is a different topic).

The problem may be that the m3u would contains artist name, song title, and position in the playlist, and even if you could export this, it would not be very robust to import somewhere else.

Halide is quite domain specific though, it won't help you to create a new database system for instance, or help you on your hadoop algorithm.

It is not completely true. See for instance what PNaCl is doing: you can compile C++ (or any similar compiled language) to (LLVM) byte code, and then JIT it at runtime.
