Your comment reminds me of the 20 year old song “Every OS sucks”. Every OS wastes your time, from the desktop to the lap, Everything since Apple Dos, Just a bunch of crap. From Microsoft, to Macintosh, to Lih-- lie-- lih-- lie... nux, Ever

Sounds like they’re fighting the symptoms instead of the cause. You can’t pump billions in subsidies into the market, lower interest rates to the floor to prevent that money from going around capital markets and not expect some kind of dysf

Makes me think of the classic video of a white blood cell chasing a bacterium. You can sense the frantic desperation of the bacterium as it tries to get away from something monstrous that will inevitably swallow it whole. https://

These games aim to be "rewarding" and therefore worthwhile. In many ways, these types of games offer an alternative world and life that's more rewarding than reality. You could look at the existence of these games as a triu

This is a little hobby project of mine. An exercise in trying to eliminate all of the build tools from Create React App while trying to keep as many of the developer comforts as possible. I'm curious to know what the HN community think

Every cent wasted on this, instead of being spent on building out solar, wind, and storage, brings climate catastrophe incrementally closer. But in the real world the money going into this is on top of that going into solar / wind &#

As someone from a country still in the EU the Brexit outcome makes me uncomfortable. It is clear now that the EU is a set of golden handcuffs for those on the inside. As the EU grows in power it dictates more and more rules. I’ve heard numb

Very much doubt the desktop has a configuration problem as it is set up the same as the laptop. I think the difference is down to the single core performance edge that the m1 has. In theory multi core benchmarks should dictate the performan

The m1 air is the star of the show for me, because it is a machine that overdelivers to such a degree. I got one to replace my laptop, and to my surprise discovered that it outperforms my i5 9600K desktop, by a noticeable margin, without ev

It can also be seen as a sort of challenge: for the longest time what we could compute was limited by our hardware, and we ran close to its limits. Nowadays what we can compute is mostly limited by our imagination, and we run close to those

I used BeOS as a daily driver for a few years back in the day. It was a great OS, wonderfully smooth and powerful. But I was forced off of it because of the lack of applications. Applications make or break an OS. Microsoft had to learn this

Setting up teams for inner source work can be done and tends to earn itself back, but most teams aren’t set up for this. Typical solutions for the issues you mention: trusted committers to review and merge work without having that role burd

I’ve used syncthing for years now to keep a bunch of large folders with millions of files synced between multiple computers running windows, linux and macos. Works really well and it is light on system resources.

I think modern day goods are better at being just durable enough to serve their intended lifetime, but no more than that. Also, I think every generation has products that last a really long time. My personal example is that 30 years ago I s

What is missing in that explanation for me is the increase in value from perceived artificial scarcity. Like paint on paper costs almost nothing until it has the right artificially scarce provenance and becomes a work of art, some cryptocur

Going for microservices without a central director role is indeed madness and leads to inefficiency. My employer has a landscape like that, hundreds of microservices each managed by a different team (some teams manage multiple). However, we

These tech companies are ridiculous to the point that some law should be written to curb their attitudes. IANAL, but doesn’t contract law already cover this? Apple terminated the contract one sided. They are allowed to do so, but only by

Was that an artificial load test? The heaviest continuous load I’ve put my m1 air under was playing one of the tomb raider games, which puts a heavy load on cpu and gpu, and it still lasted 3 to 4 hours on battery.

On my iphone it pretty reliably charges up to 80%, waits a few hours and then charges to 100% when I put it on the charger for the night. On my m1 air I’ve only known it to charge to 80% after a period of several weeks where it was docked.

The call for better regulation is not inherently in conflict with this being a people / culture problem. There is no set of rules that cannot be subverted from within if those enforcing the rules wish to subvert them. Presently the U.S

Well, the libraries included at runtime from cdn are still minified. It’s only the app code that is gzipped and not minified, and it is only the very largest projects where minification will make a meaningful difference for the app’s own (n
