Wait, if screwing over developers doesn't affect 99% of users, what is the point of doing it in the first place. To capture 1% more revenue? I suspect in reality they expect their change to ultimately affect more than 1% of the user base. A

Here is a video comparing the 3gs to the 4s for internet browsing speed. The complicated sites are much different the simple sites are basically the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuSYkdyfuTA I expected it to be more of a blowout on

Raw speed per core is increasing DRAMATICALLY in mobile. Faster than even Moore's law would dictate. As the die process has shrunk, more transistors are fitting within the mobile TDP ceiling so modern processor methods are finally getting u

Intel Medfield idles at 2.6 Watts and peaks at 3.7 Watts. The Windows 8 tablets will be using its successor, Clover Trail. there are roughly 40 tablets that will launch with it. Intel isn't efficient enough for phones (see the comment below

Why would they build a Windows RT tablet? Intel now makes price/performance/power-competitive x86 chips that can run full Windows. Microsoft only made Windows RT as a hedge against another Intel mobile failure and as a way to push developer

Pinch and zoom in 2001 on a capacitive screen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waSXkJBKT1s&t=2m19s This was presented in the case. Apple argued it didn't represent prior art because: 1. The screen was a projector and therefor this show

I haven't made any IP statements, broad or otherwise. I agree that the issue is surely complex. It does seem fair to assume that I can use logic and literacy to at least isolate the items I don't understand. If you look a few comments down

Awesome find. It's a shame that several of the relevant pages are not included in the document. I assume for trade secret reasons? Either way, the ONLY two Apple refutations are: 1. The display is not integrated in the device 2. The video

I don't buy that. A projector is a display, right? Otherwise this sentence would be possible: "I showed my powerpoint the the executive board without using a display". Either way it doesn't seem relevant since it is capacitive and display-c

In 1985 the average age of a car on the road was about 6 years. In 2012, the average age is over 11 years. This has a number of obvious implications on new-car purchasing behavior of young people: 1. It's much easier to buy a used car now s

Interesting. There are too many non-interesting, but pedantically correct comments that derail discussions. The community goal of an HN comment thread should be to unearth the most interesting, useful aspects of the submitted content. Corre

When the survey initially came out I was randomly given Computer Modern. The day before, I had painstakingly converted Computer Modern it to a webfont for a friend's blog ( http://www.krisjordan.com ) and I was shocked to see it on nytimes.

A subtle point this article makes is that pure black doesn't exist as displayed by your monitor. #000 is just the darkest value your monitor can display. Across monitors, contrast ratio can vary by over an order of magnitude. I'm not saying

Bloatware is only half of the problem that I mention. The hardware components they use are also cheap. I don't mean 'cheap' in the sense of 'good value', I mean 'senselessly cheap' and 'bad value'. They use the worst 1366x768 TN panels in

They absolutely need to price it low for their own sake. The point of the initial surface tablet, and Windows RT itself is to force devs to develop Metro apps so that Windows 8 can have a compelling tablet experience. The end game is not Wi

This is not new. In gym class 20 years ago the teacher put in an old "how to shoot with Rick Barry" VHS. Proper shooting included a moderate number of revolutions and focus on the back iron. Every basketball camp in the country explains how

For systems with a keyboard and a mouse, Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with a new, full screen start menu. If you unplug your keyboard and mouse, you get a UI that is designed for touch. Makes sense to me.

It's not slight, area grows as a square. It has over twice the screen area of a 4.6" phone. So it's half the size of a 10" tablet, and twice the size of the largest phones.

Hardware-wise, this is competitive with the very best Android tablets that are currently out. Only the Transformer Prime Infinity seems to best it, and that isn't available for order yet. This is certainly a case of 'price as a signal'. The
