Did you see the list? Finding a "generic" instance that's open to signups honestly isn't easy, right now. I ended up on fosstodon.org, which is not as generic as I'd like but seemed like the least terrible option I

You actually can't sign up on mastodon.social at the moment. I thought the same, all the instances are for weirdly specific groups I'm not in. You don't have this problem with email, there's no requirement to choose an e

I guess you might be talking about a different language / environment than I'm used to, but even in the 100 assertion test case you get useful tracebacks in python. Testing lots of things at the same time means strictly speaking y

For me, the "trending topics" show me plenty of people screaming at each other from diverse (and often vile and insane) viewpoints. Maybe I've brought that on myself though.

For me, the issue wasn't that I had to fix it frequently , but that when I did it was urgent, stressful and disruptive. Eventually the VDS I was renting had a fatal HD crash and I gave up.

I don't think that's quite right. If you were a full-on Nazi you'd be generally ignored by the sort of people who spend their time calling out minor transgressions among their fellow travellers.

Yeah you're right actually, glancing at Rightmove (UK property site), and going by the standard 4.5x mortgage test, you're probably not going to get a decent family home in Central-ish London on £200k. Shit's fucked up. Edit:
