"Can you spare a few minutes for Cancer Research?" is a thing people say when they're trying to get you to donate to cancer research charities. Jimmy interprets it instead as meaning she wants him to spend a few minutes doing

Last time I looked at what EAs actually donate to, a lot more of it looks like "conventional human welfare issues" than you might think. I guess sci-fi thought experiments are more accessible and fun than deworming or whatever, so

Wikipedia says "The adoption of CinemaDNG among camera manufacturers appears to be hindered by Red Digital Camera’s patent US9245314"[0]. Also there'd be no reason to remove CinemaDNG from their cameras otherwise? Plus I&#x

From the outside it seemed like they removed CinemaDNG due to patent threats from RED, and added BRAW to replace it. But that might be joining the dots and making five.

As I understand it BRAW was developed to avoid RED's patents, which I heartily approve of but I don't think they should advertise it as "open and license free" when it isn't. Like I said, I do like BM's stuff.

I like them too but my gripe is they claim BRAW is an "open and license-free standard" when (as far as I can tell) it's undocumented, supported only via closed binary blobs and distributed under a very non-free license.

It looked really promising for a while, but in my experience was too buggy to use in real life. Also I think it was almost entirely the work of one dev or small team, who dropped out a few years ago. Edit: It does have recent commits though

I don't think it's in this release, but the Blender thing I'm most excited about is the new realtime compositor[0]. The lack of a decent Free compositor is one of the things that pushed me towards using proprietary software f

As far as I know it's unrelated, but William Burroughs did a similarly themed but much more cynical thing called "Words of Advice for Young People". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS_X1Y_X8sg

But afaict all the internet options for pursuing a creative career involve putting in a lot of hours for little or no money, which is hard (or seems like a bad idea) if you're not on a financially solid footing. I don't think th

Outside of race / gender, the article doesn't touch on whether this has got worse or better. I would put money on it having got much worse since the 20th century, with massively increased living costs (mostly housing) and decrease

Sorry to break it to you, but I'm pretty sure the wording on the site (which I don't have open anymore) suggested 5 was below the "normal" range, which presumably means it's well below the median. I'd be extrem

Maybe the author sees crackdowns on LGBT stuff in SA as related to crackdowns on LGBT stuff in UAE, and therefore thought it reasonable to mention them in the same article.

Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. The expression "free speech" has a meaning outside the US constitution. It's like if I were to start quoting the Magna Carta at you. I'd further argue that it clearly has a meaning out
