Sadly all real firewalls need root. I was using AFWall+ for a long time it has neat controls for every app to allow or deny Wifi, Cell or LAN (if you have). It is a iptables/nftables frontend so you can customize the rules to your hear

That is weird. Seems like crc optimization is quite a rabbit hole. https://github.com/komrad36/CRC has a massive section about it in the README. Really interesting.

Interesting. I guess M1 doesn't have the 'crc32' "acceleration" that is included in SSE4.2.

There is one for the weird lz4json format they use now: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mozlz4-edit/ But it is super unwieldy. Pretty much the only way to decode those files without compil

Exactly. As I understood the problem lies in the import of new packages. That was hanging and the deletion of one single file from the folder took ~30s. In the older versions <=0.9 this was working faster. This caused the IPFS mirror

It worked like this: rsync2ipfs-cluster fetched the packages from a rsync mirror into an IPFS-MFS-Folder updated the link in IPNS and then added this folder to a running IPFS instance/cluster. All of those packages are then available f

Torrents don't handle frequent updates very well. You'd have tons of outdated torrent floating around. They work well for archives and installation media though that doesn't change that often.

You could update Archlinux with pacman over ipfs from around 2015 until last year. https://github.com/ipfs/notes/issues/84 Then the mirror became too slow and couldn't handle the amount of package data

I really miss the MSDN CD-ROMs. They had all of the information without network latency. Indexed and searchable. Categorized in a tree, complete with code examples you could immediately try. Press F1 on a function and there is the reference

Sounds like Space Quest 4. That one had a Nose/Smell and Mouth/Taste icon. The narrator (Gary Owens) was also amazing in the CD version.

Some of the best parts of the SQ4 talkie are the sarcastic narrated death screens. And SQ5 has neat animations. The manual tells you to "save early, save often" for a reason.

I think Valve disable baloo (understandable since you don't want file indexing while gaming). That's probably why the default KDE search will perform poorly. You should be able to use KFind which will work kind of like the Windo

The server version called "Windows Search Services" was rather alright. It was even integrated into the Win7 Libraries and you could search through contents server-side from Explorer. It supported plugins and was reasonably fast.

It's amazing. It does what Google Desktop tried and failed to do on Windows XP. And it's blazingly fast by reading NTFS directly instead of using the Windows API. (OK, back then needing 1GB of RAM was pretty much impossible.)
