I work at MSFT on windows kernel drivers - not the kernel directly though. I’d say go for it. Knowing how to program in kernel mode is a lucrative skill set. There aren’t enough people that know how to do it. In my experience the kernel dev

Sounds like he’s been hired for 7 years, or are you saying he hasn’t actually done anything in that time? If you choose not to partner him, be prepared for him to leave. Ask yourself if that is worth it.
