Read the books. They're some of the best space opera books out there. As good as the show is, the books are even more incredible.

Yep, yep. I've been building a MUD from scratch in Go for the last few months. Super fun project, and the nostalgia is overwhelming. Love it.

My hearing loss is severe, so I can't just get Costco hearing aids... and insurance never covers it. They cover the audiologist exam, but not the hearing aid itself. It sucks so bad. And yes, if I want Bluetooth accessories, it's

I just wish hearing aids were covered by insurance. Mine aren't, which means if mine breaks, I'm paying $3500 out of pocket... for one. And I'm one of the "lucky" ones in that I can only hear out of one ear (and thu

I picked up "Concurrency in Go" ( http://amzn.to/2xiGSmi ) a few weeks ago. Total game changer on the concurrency part. It totally explains the whole model with a ton of examples and concurrency patterns. I'm s

That actually IS the point. The point is that I convince myself to do the hassle by saying "It's only for five minutes," but obviously after five minutes, you've already done the hard part, so you might as well do the re

Exercising. I run 3x/week now, and I sleep better, I feel better, I'm thinner, and I snagged a wife. Should have started running back in high school instead of spending my days playing MUDs. (Not really. I don't regret anythi

Excellent point. I sort of got into this discussion a few minutes ago with a friend of mine, but I think part of solving Epic Problems is revisiting the notion that one must work in order to survive, and particularly revisit the 40 hour wor

One strategy that I adopt is to think of industries that are highly manual labor and dream of ways to fix that. I forget the name of the company, but there's a startup in the Bay Area that builds drones for farmers. Right now, farmers

There's actually three acts: Earth, Space, Moon. It's really a trilogy smushed up into one book. I agree, though. The first two acts were great, and the third fell flatter than the earlier two. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. It

I don't really "get" poetry. I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent and well-read, but I've just had a hard time wrapping my head around poetry as a medium. That said, I do enjoy Robert Frost (cliche, I know). Th

Most of my ideas revolve around the need for better transportation. Ideal (for me) but completely impractical: the interstate exits end in giant parking garages. Everyone walks, bikes, or takes light-rail/buses to get around the city.

It's not so much what they get paid as how much they could save by going elsewhere. If you imagine a generous 200k/year average in SF or NYC, you can also imagine that it wouldn't be 200K in a place like, say, Des Moines, IA
