At high school they finally found the money to replace the history textbooks once the books were the same age as the students studying them (the actual physical textbooks were at least 8 years old when I was a freshmen in HS).

He could be paying far less than that for rent: I live on the upper west side of Manhattan and pay $1000/month and had a 15 minute commute before I switched jobs. Further, somebody could also live and work in Brooklyn and pay more like $700

Remember unemployment insurance rules vary depending on the state. New York State for example asks if you are employed, not if you are drawing a salary.

What lockin? 1. You can still do whatever you want with your files as they still live on your local machine. 2. You can sync with Windows machines (photos were mentioned as an example in the keynote) 3. You can turn off iCloud

I would assume this to be part of the "No PC Needed" feature. (If not, this is a big oversight - one of the only real issues I have with my iPad)
