What is Zvi Mowshowitz's utility function. That's probably what the author is talking about when he talks of value.

I say this in all seriousness, though it may sound kind of snarky: You could start a farm, move somewhere with fewer "leopards", and build a new social circle. Also, can't you let a new consciousness have their own say on th

Don't you think it's a little presumptuous to say that those "not feeling anxiety are ignorant at best"? Many people fully understand the ideas behind the Yudkowskian doom scenario and they simply don't agree with

Maybe we'll discover that being human is about a lot more than just creativity, friendships, and romance. These things are important, but are they necessarily what makes us human or are they the part of humanness that is most importan

This is an interesting question. Though it's not really an answer to that specific question, Jerome Siegel in one paper says: "although animals in the wild are usually healthier that those confined to laboratories and zoos, animal

I don't think he's using the appeal to say that the way pre-industrial people live is optimal. He's saying that maybe 7-9 hours isn't optimal.

People have research modern pre-industrial societies and while they do have fires and nicer sounds than drilling they don't sleep in caves. Also birds are really loud sometimes. I don't think you'd want to sleep in their circ

My point is that CBTi isn't what you need if you have sleep apnea or some other treatable disorder as the root of your sleeping issues.

I think that sometimes it takes a bit more than discipline, if you are going to really do it right. Sometimes there is an underlying medical issues keeping you from quality sleep (and leading to a delayed sleep phase) and other times it mig

I think our friendly internet medical doctor was trying to say that there are some useful principles in CBT-I that could be helpful for a lot of people, which is probably true. As someone who took way too long fussing with sleep hygiene and
