Haha my wife and I already call this "Golden retriever mode" when I get the zoomies after too much work or when I first wake up mind racing and full of wrestling energy. If it's later in the day I like to put a heavy weight i

I hiked 1000 miles of the AT last year over three months and didn't lose a pound. No real muscle gain, no real fat loss. Bodies can be extremely resistant to weight loss.

I've seen this play out on myself. I finally realized that I can only lose about 10lb of fat before my body refuses to lose more. Further extreme calorie cuts will only cut muscle. Including dropping to zero calories on a extended fast

My question exactly. No sense building a house on someone else's land. Too many projects I've worked on were shattered because of technology that stopped being offered or got too expensive to justify.

This is the best way I've found to manage a high performing engineering team. You do need to be extremely attuned to the development process, and like you said, read everyone's code. But it is absolutely worth the effort.

Such a platform should be a co-op owned by all the users, designed for the public good. It really is almost like a piece of infrastructure. But AWS is a business, and businesses are there to make money. They are there to extract as much mon

Of course you can switch databases, but in practice it is extremely expensive. That's a big reason why it is pretty rare. Why use a closed source tool and take on that risk when great open source ones exist?

    by JackMorgan 3y ago

My alternative is to use battle tested open source software. I don't suggest writing a database in house. Also, I would say the opposite, it happens all the time. There's only a few closed source software tools that have been arou

Survivorship bias. These are the ones that haven't _yet_ gotten worse and are still currently popular. I'm listing them so people won't get blindsided when they do eventually bite their users. There isn't enough space to

This should also be a wakeup call to anyone using closed source tools at all: DynamoDB, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, AWS Lambda, Azure, AWS, Azure Devops, SqlServer, Oracle, etc. While some of these tools are best in class, it's borrowed ti

Last year I moved to the downtown of a small progressive college town (definitely not a party school). I joined the volunteer fire department, and then 2-3 times a week I walk across the street to local coffeeshop for breakfast. I do all my

Big oof right there. Thankfully, I've never had that happen on the job. The lack of meaningful version control in most VB projects is dangerous. It's like trying to operate a chainsaw without a handle. Whenever I get a new VB proj

I make a good living turning VB+Access messes into something modern and stable. After a point it's such a huge mess that it's either rewrite or leave it untouched forever. Sometimes it's important enough to pay someone to unt

And where would you meaningfully deploy a VB form other than your personal computer? Likewise, you don't need to deploy react at all if you are running it locally, just npm start. You can even print to PDF from the browser. You can use

The Diquís people of Costa Rica also made these huge stone spheres that are extremely impressive! They aren't kidding about them being used as lawn decorations for ticos, in my neighborhood there were at least three, and one in a park.

Ok, last question! How are you planning to build those walls? Where are you going to get all that stone? Have you priced out having someone build it for you? My rough calculation says 20 acres is about 1000 feet per side, 3 meters is 10 fee

I'm legitimately curious, if food supply is disrupted, how do you plan to stop starving people from stealing that food while you are asleep? Armed guards doing shifts along the walls? If you've got enough food production that&#x27

Wise advice indeed. There's a fine line between "working to to live" and living carelessly. I would hope anyone attempting the same thing ensure they have a solid plan for the eventuality of old age and/or broken wrists,
