That page seems very keen on the twice-featured paragraph attempting to define "Technical intelligence": Technical intelligence involves the accurate appraisal and expression of the ability to interact with machines in a way that enhances

What is the purpose of this post? I read these styles of submission on Hacker News often, with the jargon, and the charts, and the definitions. I usually leave them feeling that the author has tried to persuade themself something, not me.

I can't really refute any of that, it's a good takedown of the analogy. I'm trying to draw parallels which help me understand what's happening and behave appropriately but yes, there are very relevant differences. I suppose I would say two

Indeed. Any ideas how to solve this one? The closest I've come is acknowledging there may be a sweet spot somewhere between introspection, expression, and just following good activity habits without thinking or talking too hard about them.

Regarding what this looks like in a few decades, I talked elsewhere in the thread about slideshow evenings and it was correctly pointed out these are exclusively thought of as a joke. I believe that's where we're going: we'll mock the narci

Spot on. I may have expressed myself unclearly - I am indeed referencing that trope of boring slide evenings, and likening them to the photos which flood our social newsfeeds, showing e.g. Asian Fusion cuisine, rock climbing, and pouting in

This, this, a million times this. I recall a professor very fond the phrase "you may wish to examine your motives". I have found that fantastic advice and hear it most of the time before I click "post", "reply", "submit", etc. Even here, no

My parents' generation would share holiday snaps or even host slide show evenings for neighbours after traveling somewhere. I think that photo sharing on Facebook etc. is just the modern version of that and as back then, we have people who

The one my teacher used was the billiard ball, and told us "if the Earth were the same size as this, it would be smoother ". A quick google suggests that is indeed true, but it would not be rounder . ( http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/ba

What is bothering me most now is that if Earth is 100 pixels wide then 1 pixel is 127.42km and Mars should be something like 54600000/127.42 = ~428500 pixels away, not the claimed 857000. The radius of planets has been used where it should

Indeed, and it appears that 63.71km per pixel has then been used to calculate the pixel distances to the Moon and to Mars so in fact they are twice as many pixels long as they should be.

You're right! How frustrating. The most frustrating is that I was just about to share this with some friends and know that I now risk either: 1.) Them smugly pointing that inaccuracy out and failing to enjoy how cool this is otherwise, or 2

I hear you, but with respect think you have misconstrued the quotation. Montaigne is saying that the law is so wide and so complex that without knowing it we are constantly committing crimes, for which no fair judge would try us and for whi

Upvoted, I think that's a very fair point. From Calvin and Hobbes to Montaigne: "There is no man so good that if he placed all his actions and thoughts under the scrutiny of the laws, he would not deserve hanging ten times in his life".

I like this. I live in a country where exaggerated politeness is deeply ingrained, and redundant over-explanation common. I've been here long enough that it's rubbed off on me to where the original spoof message didn't really ring any alarm

I was so sure the final paragraph would be a "gotcha", revealing that everything he had said about wood burning was fabricated specifically to make people experience the sense of resistance he wanted them to.
