As individuals, I agree. Producing media and computational tools are where we can help the most. Our industry is already geared towards "caring" (in the economic sense, not the emotional sense) about efficiency anyway. e.g. laptop

I can relate to your sentiment about getting good at treading water. I think growth can happen in adversity but a lot of growth also happens from a place of feeling safe in the major areas of your life. 2020 has made me not feel safe in m

It seems you were downvoted for reasons I don't understand but I think your comment is important. I agree that aligning economic incentives is a good (and probably the only?) way to steer hordes of people in directions that will either

We're not facing extinction yet and this sort-of alarmism is actually unhelpful. I too thought for a while that we're facing extinction but we're not there yet, I found this helpful to read: http://www.realclimate.

Haskell and OCaml are definitely not just hobbies. I've used Haskell full-time for the last five years of my career. The company I work for uses Haskell for a network packet parsing engine, web api servers, CLI executables, build infra

I like the idea behind "brain oriented" code but I'm skeptical of Python's suitability for the task. A language that gives you explicit types, algebraic data types, and can separate effects from pure code is a crucial fi

That sucks. I highly recommend the book "Anxious" which is about the neurobiology of fear and anxiety. Reading it feels like reading the owner's manual to my brain.

I use it in production at my job, I primarily use it to catch sneaky bugs in designs before implementing them and to produce something tangible to talk over with other engineers once I've settled on a design. It's worth learning a

I liked this article and how it was framed for businesses but it seems generally useful to many different types of activities: - Pull requests should usually optimize for latency, not throughput (i.e. smaller PRs/changes are usually be

I'm 33 and I wish I learned this a long time ago (I started realizing I did this 4 years ago and it took a while for it to sink in how much people dislike unsolicited advice). I think, for me, it comes from a deep desire and need to be

Sorry for the late reply. First of all, I don't think pasta is too terrible if it's fitting in your macros. Wheat will have a larger glycemic impact on you though than many other carbohydrate sources (e.g. sweet potatoes, which I

It is not common and if you experience this then you are: bad at setting your own boundaries, bad at mate selection, or bad at friend selection. Men are not victims here. Have a hard look at why you think this and fix the problem.

I agree we should also plant trees and cultivate forests however that won't help fix our oceans. The reason why I like the olivine weathering proposal is that it weathers co2 out of the ocean and uses the ocean as a carbon sink. This w

I've only compared it to sulphur dioxide and the risks look fewer. The other benefit of enhanced weathering with olivine distributed in energetic waters is that it removes CO2 from the ocean (letting the ocean act as a carbon sink for

You don't have to completely change your lifestyle to make beneficial improvements to your life and community. We often make the mistake of thinking that a strong signal will have more impact than frequent and consistent weak signals.

Really there's a general point here I think: up front, careful reasoning (which should eventually excogitation in English or math or code) not only helps prevent mistakes but it also produces documentation and reasoning collateral.
