Yes to all of this and I'll throw in my two cents on our web server setup which is nginx + uwsgi (which has served remarkably well).

That's a risk you run using services provided for by anyone other than yourself. My bank could suddenly go under and I would have to switch banks... It's not just in the software world, that's anything.

Good article, terrible title - I instantly said to myself, "WTF? Is this an article about the 'masculine' CEO and the spineless techie? Fuck that." but I read it anyway because I didn't want to be "that guy".

TLS series is wonderful - HTDP is great too, it assumes the student doesn't have programming experience which means they start out with simple stuff (and use Scheme for the implementation language!).

This is not a helpful comment. Additionally I do not agree - while there is a difference between academically focused individuals and industry focused individuals they absolutely should not be mutually exclusive. That's a social generaliz

Learn you lots of Algebra; then go learn you some functional programming (in particular LISP, HTDP: How To Design Programs and SICP are great for this). Then I would pick up Randall Hyde's books on "How to Write Great Code" series - he star

While I generally agree with you, there are some applications out there that get distributed multi-node environments "right" without using Erlang. It's just much harder to do because those problems are (for the most part) solved BY Erlang

It's a distributed multi-node key-value store. They built it using Erlang (I almost consider that, alone, a "feature").

I have - I left a a very stable job and pursued self-study for 9 months. I still pursue it, but not in a rigorous fashion as I had for those 9 months; once my startup levels out a bit more and I can hire more people to do my job, I will pro

This is a good example of what was meant, IMHO. There are interesting cases, though, where multi-selecting items and then acting on them could require using a query parameter. "action=remove", "action=update", "action=validate" or something

I've been reading a lot of these articles and would like to think that I've implemented a RESTful API. I use GET for the get_all, get_one methods; PUT for create and PUT for replace/modify (as in replacing a field, not appending to it), HEA

I do believe it is "wrong" to watch pirated content but like I said in another comment, the problem has two sides. People are doing things that "come naturally" to them on the internet and Hollywood is trying to map an old business model on

This really is the most level headed and correct response IMHO. Hollywood is responding, not to the internet as a modality of speech, but to the rampant piracy of materials that legally makes them money - they are doing nothing wrong by p

I basically use nginx the way people would use Apache and Varnish I use as a webcache. Others have explained it thoroughly.

I disagree, I think this was a very appropriate move for Google. Consider that Google has shareholders to answer to (they can't just take a community vote, like Wikipedia). I'm actually thoroughly thrilled with what they did, when I visited

nginx, Varnish, and uWSGI are oh so awesome together. My app (I run a Pyramid based application) is lightning fast, and very easy to configure (much easier than mod_wsgi).

I'm still going to argue the point, there are no distributions in the sense of Linux. There's just "FreeBSD". "BSD: Berkeley Software Distribution" You're being pedantic here, again, I meant it in the context of linux distributions (that's

Why is that anymore dangerous than knowing how rm, rmdir, and chmod work on the commandline? Python's os module is not exempt from permissions - it's obviously "dangerous" if you run the interpeter as root then start doing silly things like

This is just as crucial as building your API properly , IMHO. I should be able to piece together my API integration from a mixture of examples, good documentation of deep features and caveats, and intuiting API methods. For example, this A

I love hg, and bitbucket is the best we've got - but man, the developers at BitBucket have their heads stuck in so deep in the sand!!! GitHub "won" because the developers were not only innovative but they listened to their user base. BitBuc

FOAF+SSL!!!!!!!!!! There exists a rather elegant alternative to passwords for authenticating a user's identity - it's been around for a while but the user barrier is too high: FOAF+SSL. The idea is you generate an X.509 cert and install it

Software has a huge presence in aerospace! But, programming an avionics system (or even less important support systems) is nothing like building a web application.
