I usually sum it up by saying that what we have is a very good bullshit generator. It is bad at reasoning but good at making up answers that sounds correct and crossing fingers that the corrector won't look twice at what they say.

I was once explained the interest of quick iteration cycles (the main opposition, IMO, to a waterfall model) in a simple way: The teacher drew a very simple chart : y = t. "This is, in a given project lasting from t=0 to t=1, the amoun

Disabled? Throttled down the speed by half? Yes. But to disconnect whole regions, you have to do conscious sabotage and even Mubarak did not manage to switch off Egypt when he wanted to and gave orders to.

e-bikes dont drive by themselves, are slow, dangerous (the roads are very narrow with no sidewalk) open to the rain and have shit carrying capacity. And I say that as a fan of e-bikes.

I live in the Japanese countryside and I absolutely need a car for living, but it makes me sad to realize that it would take almost nothing for me to get rid of the car. I spend my driving time 90% on a single road where all the places I ne

2020-2021 was a very weird period. The fact that a given predictive model failed during these years is not really a strong indictment against the model. It makes sense to suspend the algorithmic trading during that time until the situation

An historian friend once told me that whenever you see "ritualistic" or "religious reasons" mentioned in archeology publications it basically means "we have no fucking clue why they did that".

Let's not be ridiculous. This room has no artificial light and almost no natural light, minimal ventilation, no water, no electricity, which is the norm nowadays even for cheap apartments.

The domestication part makes the most sense in my opinion. However, I only see attempts to explain that genetically. Aren't there environmental factors that can influence this measure?

Also, the rust community is too nice to openly admit it, but it's goal IS to displace C as the main low level language especially for the kernel. This is doomed to attract a lot of attention

I'd rather have people too concerned about ethics than not enough. Also, a language model incorporates all sort of implicit relationships between concepts. If you use a biased dataset, that is sexist or racist, you will end up with a m

I am mostly thinking of B7, because I know 2 persons in my family who get seriously depressed when they lack it. Note that I did not say it is impossible to get these through a vegan diet, just that it takes some efforts and care to have th

Good point. If you are concerned with animal well-being, you are probably concerned with environmental issues as well, and it is hard to not be depressed in that case.

20 years ago we were joking about it being 40 year away. So yes, it is timely progress. I am still bitter that we don't invest more on this research which has the potential to solve the climate crisis "unexpectedly".
