If the US could make excuses for not paying off its debts, US Treasury bonds wouldn't have a triple AAA rating.

Started off with some good points, but then went on to adopt a definition of "social media" that was so broad as to be useless. That too many Facebook "friendships" might devalue reasonable friendships is a reasonable point. Implying that F

My first thought was that they were trying to protect their employees from the Chinese people, a subset of whom seem quite keen on starting nationalistic internet lynch mobs. Obviously the government is pretty dangerous as well, but I thoug

Perfect timing - I've been playing around with arcade-style games in Clojure, trying to get them to work as applets.

I'm a student, and can't afford to pay to watch Mixergy. But I still enjoy watching the videos while they're available for free, and I don't begrudge Andrew for wanting to make money off his own hard work. "HOME OF THE AMBITIOUS UPSTART" -

Great link (though it should come with a procrastination warning...) I've just spent over an hour browsing through it. It's definitely a different perspective.

His book is also excellent: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0123694965?ie=UTF8&ta... - I checked it out of the library recently and it really is a bible for game design. It literally covers everything you'd want to know about makin

Although this guy is correct in saying that FarmVille, Mafia Wars, etc are really crappy, game-play wise (but excellent slot machines), I think Facebook games hold massive promise for indie developers; they're bringing casual games to a mas

Isn't the obvious problem that it's a terrible idea? I can't comment on subway commuters, but I've never been especially interested in meeting people on my commute, beyond the occasional random smalltalk. "Each one of my co-founders was a k

Links to a presentation by Jesse Schell, whose book on game design - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0123694965?ie=UTF8&ta... - I read recently. If you're at all interested in getting into games, this is such an essential read. It

1. It takes only 1 hour for a post to disappear from the “New” page. Inevitable for a news site. 2. The Point system sets the wrong incentives Most people seem to be in it for the points. This could happen, but I haven't seen many signs of

Can someone with statistics knowledge comment on whether these results are significant? With 10,000 trials they probably are, but it'd be nice to get more insight than raw percentages can provide.

I didn't actually expect this to get posted. I assumed it had been posted to HN already, but I wanted to see what the discussion was (when you post an already posted link, you get taken to the comments page for that link).

I've recently become much more aware of these 'trend' articles. When you realise that journalists love writing about new trends that they think they've identified, and that people love reading them... you learn to be a bit more skeptical as

No. (Personally, I wouldn't try making yet another social bookmarking site. The only way I can see of competing with the existing players is to market it better so that you get users who've never heard of Digg/Reddit/SU/Delicious/etc. Hint:

I agree; I wrote something similar as a comment on the TC post. I really can't see a vanity URL on someone else's site that you got for free is really your property, so all this talk about Facebook 'snatching' it from him is over-dramatic.

Some good advice (don't be pedantic, don't tell people what they should do), some not so good. Becoming a geek is more socially acceptable these days. A lot of people are interested in technology. A few girls find shy, geeky guys attractive

It's an exaggeration to call China Daily a propaganda vessel. Yes, I'm serious. Also, the present leadership of China has no real desire to denounce capitalism. Other than that, your criticisms are valid.

Hume pretty much refuted this point of view 300 years ago. Lack of determinism does not create free will; if your actions were totally random and uncaused, then they could not be said to be free. They'd just be the equivalent of unconscious
